Natural bodybuilders like the tryptophan in turkey for it's supposed connection to growth hormone release, which is also supposedly released more at night. Unfortunately, none of the above was ever proven to be anything more than gym myth. I have quite a lot of "stuff" about tryptophan in my strength training books, but not sure that it relates at all to what you're interested in using it for. Besides turkey, pumpkin seeds are supposed to be loaded with it. Because of the tryptophan, turkey has long been my first-choice protein source, with fish for the good omegas.

You aren't supposed to eat turkey before final exams, either. Again, this hasn't been proven, but it supposedly makes students sleepy. A lot of teachers *believe* it, even though the science isn't there to support it.

I tried 5-HTP to suppress carb cravings. Didn't work, but I don't think I took it properly. (Now I'm reading something about not combining it with protein.) I tried a few different brands to no such effect, but I do recall that it made me sleepy.
