Guest guest
: welcome to the group!! You'll find that supplements are an issue upon which there is not unanimous agreement. Some of us supplement heavily, others not. I started out taking many supplements but now do not. I now take only selenium (because I'm allergic to Brazil nuts - the richest selenium source) and an iodine pill a couple of times a week; I depend on my food sources for other nutrients. I get sick rarely, so I feel confident that this is working for me. But others will no doubt tell of heavy supplement usage. on 2/3/2003 12:43 AM, mrsancoleman <mrsancoleman@...> at mrsancoleman@... wrote: > Do I need to take any supplements if I eat a > nutritionally dense diet, exercise regularly, and have no known > ailments? > Kind regards,
Guest guest
, after five or 6 years of fairly heavy supplementation, I now use a multivitamin daily, some additional b12, b6, and folacin per Dr.'s suggestion to control unruly homocysteine levels (now well controlled), and, because I am avoiding all but the smallest amount of animal protein in the form of high fat fish (avoiding saturated fat, which accompanies animal protein) I take additional epa/dha most days, but not on the days when I eat fish. I also use a once a week supplement that includes selenium in a modest amount, and saw palmetto for age-related benign prostate hypertrophy. Note that these are for specific objectives and not for general " if some is good, more is better " purposes. I am not consistently a paragon for perfect eating, but my health is much better than that of my contemporaries, who are also in their seventies. Guest guest
> the form of high fat fish (avoiding saturated fat, which > accompanies animal protein) Hi Ed, Given this viewpoint, some quality time with the educational resources of westonaprice.org would be in order. As for the general query about supplementation practices, I take E and C, nothing else, no multi-supplements, etc, although I'm currently contemplating a low-dose Mg supplement as part of my anti-osteoporosis regimen. I try to get everything necessary from food, absolutely none of which is fortified. I also enjoy some cod liver oil everyday, which is somewhere in-between a supplement and food.
