Hello everyone! Well, today is officially my two month MGB anniversary.

I'm doing

great and feeling wonderful. I'm still on prevacid for the time being but

other than

that I'm just enjoying my post MGB life. I've lost a total of 41 lbs since

3-28-01 and

although I sometimes think that is a bit slow I'm trying to be patient. I'm

down from

a 30/32 to a 22/24 in most things, in jeans I'm down from a 30 to a 24 so I

guess

I'm just moving right along. I'm really looking forward to going to the MGB

picnic

in September. I will be one day past my 6 month anniversary and hopefully a

size

or two smaller. Not much else to report - everything is going great!

Thanks, Piotr!

Nice going. That's ALT down from 190 to 80 in 2 months.

Just for information, here's what ALT means:

These letters are acronyms for enzymes - proteins inside of cells.

AST for example stands for aspartate amino transferase. This enzyme

used to be called serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT),

hence the two names. ALT = amino alanine transferase, GGTP= gamma

glutamyl transpeptidase, and AP= alkaline phosphatase. Different

cells have different enzymes inside them, depending on the function

of the cell. Liver cells happen to have lots of AST, ALT, and GGTP

inside them. When cells die or are sick the enzymes leak out causing

the blood level of these enzymes to rise, which is a way of

determining if the cells in question are sick. ALT is more specific

for liver disease than AST because AST is made in more places (e.g.

heart, intestine, muscle). So the AST will rise after a heart attack

or bruised kidney. GGTP and AP are said to be more specific for

biliary disease since they are made in bile duct cells. In liver

disease caused by excess alcohol ingestion, the AST tends to exceed

the ALT, while the reverse is true to for viral hepatitis. However,

this particular generalization is often wrong.

I will make you an Apprentice Ziller for your good work, Piotr, 2

months is a lot of work to do this, and I think you deserve some

recognition for the excellent posting this information, also. Thank

you so much!

I have put the 2 month report into our Hepatitis files for others to

examine.

It's not over yet, but we are learning more each time someone nice

and thoughtful like Piotr places their results here. It may

encourage some research into these diseases. And it may help others

to get relief from the horrors of these diseases.

Very good!

Bob

Hi all!

Just want to write about how I'm doing two months post-op (surgery on

January 28). Around weeks 5-6, I wrote that I was doing very well,

had lowered my pain meds and had even gone out to dinner. Well . . .

week 7 was a different story and caught me offguard! That weekend,

it was raining so I attributed my pain and soreness to the weather

and was pretty much in bed all weekend. By Tuesday, the lower pain

meds were not doing anything (vicodin) to ease the pain. I have to

admit that this was probably the worst pain I had yet experienced

(except maybe directly after surgery, but that's a blur because of

being doped up). I called my doctor and my mentor (the fabulous Edie

) and cried HELP!!! I didn't see this coming and never expected

that I was not going to get progressively better. The doctor and

Edie were not surprised. The doctor put me back on the stronger pain

meds and told me that this was part of the healing process - healing

from the inside out. Anyway, I spent most of the next 10 days in

bed, except for when I would need to change positions, i.e., walk

around the house or sit up just to somehow find my comfort zone.

I am feeling much better and stronger this week. And while I am

leery about getting my hopes up, this time it is a different " strong "

feeling - it feels more real. I can even imagine possibly going

back to work in the beginning of May which if you had asked me that

question last week, I would have laughed and said no way! I am also

aware that this could change, but am praying that it does not. In

the meantime, I pretty much rest all day, but on days that the sun is

shining and I feel good, I will go out to dinner and even last

Saturday I had a pedicure at the salon! It was great to get out and

since we cannot bend down, my feet were in dire need of repair. The

chair for pedicures was so comfortable that I wanted to take it

home! I do travel with one of the seat cusions from Dr.Leonard's

catalog and spinal alignment which makes all chairs very

comfortable. It has a small opening towards to back where the base

of the spine would rest and therefore there is no pressure on the

spine.

Wanted to let all of you considering surgery how I am doing. I know

a lot of people on this site have different experiences, so as I

always say, we are all different. However, as trying as this can be,

I am so happy I did it! I almost forgot - I also have a new body!!!

I now have a waist and a much longer torso with lordosis!!!!! I

haven't seen that for almost 40 years!

Dear Donna,

Hon, you are only two months out, and yes you are still healing, so I'm not surprised that a step down of your med's and an upping of your pain happened. I was fairly quick to get off med's, three months, and only did because my pain was gone, but you are still in the early stages of healing. Give it more time and more rest. You'll get the pacing of your personal back as you go through this, I did this and that and I was fine, I did one more thing and I wasn't. You have to be careful to listen to your body. How I healed I know varies from many here. If you need med's, take them till you don't anymore. I also was lucky and work wasn't something I needed to return to, I was a stay at home Mom, and if I needed to lay down I could. As I always say, this is a marathon and not a sprint, take the time to heal, it's the best gift you can give yourself. You will hit walls where you feel your progress is at a standstill, this is where it's good to write things down, as you can look back and see just how far you have come. Time in the long run will be your friend, it just right now seems to go on and on. I know I wanted to be better yesterday, especially after going through three surgeries in two calendar years, the last two being revisions. Invest in your future and do the hard work of healing, because believe me it's so worth all you are going through now, when you take that long walk outside, or go shopping all day at the mall, or stand in line somewhere and realize you did it without pain. Wish I could make it go faster, but I can't, it just takes time. Also endurance comes with time, your body has had a major trauma, and know you may not fully feel like yourself for a very long time, for me it was about 18 months till felt totally back. Keep the faith, it just takes baby steps while healing!
