Many seem to think it's impossible or terribly difficult, but Walford

seems to have done fine... As usual, it's just that the resources tend not

to geared toward vegans, though Walford's recipes are careful to offer vegan

or vegetarian options.

Cheers,

james

I think the primary problem is that vegans must eat a lot of excess nitrogen in the form of non-essential amino acids which come along with the essential aminos in a protein. These add "wasted" calories. I'm not a vegan, but I have trouble getting below 1800 kcals, with a lacto-vegetarian diet. Beans and grains have a lot of glutamine, eg, in fact maybe more than the total of essential AA's. If you are a lifelong vegan, you probably know how to handle protein, but lifelong vegans by their diet, according to what I've read, usually have a smaller frame and are adapted to eating more calories, to get the same essential amino acids. I'm analyzing my diet right now and have determined the optimum would be to add some chicken 3-4 oz to reduce calories to 1500 kcals. B12 is not a problem - use a MV.

I have no bias except a scientific req't to "justify" the diet in terms of health.

Regards.

Hi all,I was wondering what you guys have read on vegans trying CRON. I think I heard once that it's not supposed to work well; but then again, there is a lot of misinformation out there about vegan diets in general, so maybe it was coming from someone who already had a bias. Undoubtedly, cautions exist, as in for vitamin B12, but still I'm thinking (and hoping) that the negativity I've heard has been overhyped....

I'm not real crazy about adding meat - it's an experiment. I can tell you it adds weight to me. For some reason, I don't need that much protein, and lacto works fine. Occasional egg - when I'm there. I can eat meat now but too much really slows me up and raises my BP. So do dried beans. I like the emphasis on veggies/fruits. They're filling, add fiber V and M. Lacto is 2- 3 cups of milk. Rice is my staple. But that's just me.

Regards.

You say you are lacto-vegetarian.I was thinking of switching to vegan when looking intocron since it seemed all the milk products were highin calories. I've been raised vegan, then lacto-ovo,so I find the taste of meat overpowering and theeffect on my stomach quite unsettling in the fewexperiemnts I've made.I'd also be interested in vegan resources, oralternatively, lacto-ovo CRON diets (do such thingseven exist)?I'm by no means an ethical vegetarian, but a veganfriend was overjoyed when I mentioned to him I wasconsidering switching back for CRON reasons - it'd beinteresting to see how feasible it is.*pokes through mom's vegan recipe book*--- jwwright <jwwright@...> wrote:> I think the primary problem is that vegans must eat> a lot of excess nitrogen in the form of> non-essential amino acids which come along with the> essential aminos in a protein. If the walford's DWIDP sw follows his Anti-Aging Plan, pg 49, it will be low on meat (green light column).

Ornish provides a better overall diet plan just adjust calories. However, I can see where some people MUST eat meat to keep the total calories down, because meats have a higher ess amino acid to total protein ratio.

Addendum from the college student's diet...Took a random sampling of my diet [today ;-)], whichhas been along the same terribly unhealthy lines sinceI left home. From the labels I got (always rounding generouslyupwards on serving number)ramen noodles - 380 two pb and applesauce sandwiches - 400massive bowl of pasta with a good cup of cheese and athird of a jar of tomato sauce - 950Now, aside from the nutritional value of this, evenpopping MVs, I always thought I was packing away thecalories. But these totals seem to place me at around1700 or so for a day where I actually took the time toeat something for lunch. Maybe ovo-lactovegetarianism is already CRON? I have the feeling Ineed to fiddle with this Walford fitness software Ijust downloaded.--- Kyberneticist <kyberneticist@...> wrote:> You say you are lacto-vegetarian.> I was thinking of switching to vegan when looking> into> cron since it seemed all the milk products were high> in calories. For my own part, I've been having great success with both veganism

and CRON at the same time.

There are soy deli meats which provide 10g protein per 50 calorie

serving -- yes, I realize this is not the same as getting in the

essential amino acids, but it's still nice and helps because it does

mean one has calories free with which to get all the amino acids.

I tend to eat around the 1400-cal area, so if I can get things in

easily with that.... I guess it's just that after a while one knows

what to buy and it all becomes routine and second nature. But I've

never had a problem with it.
