Guest guest
Ok, I am a newbie to this CR thing. I am trying to find out if being a " cronie " will just be rationalization for me to have an eating disorder. My story is like this. I am 24yo and about 6' tall. When I was 18, I weighed 138 (slightly underweight) with 14.5% body fat. My diet was scarce but fairly healthy. (I studied nutrition and was probably borderline anorexic). Now, after several years of college I have ballooned up to 160lbs and I (obviously) have trouble fitting into my old clothes. I don't want to be irritable, light headed, or faint, but I want to eat less and feel like if I get control of my diet (I am already an avid exerciser) then I could shed some of the excess pounds (mostly fat!) But, am I esentially looking into an eating disorder support group??? In , Francesca Skelton <fskelton@e...> wrote: > Newbies and lurkers, please post and introduce yourselves. Guest guest
The vast majority of eaters do not think about the consequence of what and how much they eat beyond the short term. "I'm hungry... now I'm not". CRON is based on the premise that reduced caloric consumption (CR) has long term health benefits, and that nutrition (ON) is extremely important with serious mid term consequences. Surely some will be attracted to this group looking for a successful diet regimen, perhaps with distorted image issues. Like anything else in life what you get from participating here is pretty much what you make of it. Guest guest
here's my 2 cents: I've been working into CRON for about 9 months. I do it because I want to be healthier and live longer. I refer to Walford's 120 year diet book to stay on track. I firmly believe in what he said about success in this diet. If you can't do it give up. Do not beat up your psyche. Life is only a little shorter! For me, every day is a good day to try to eat as well as I can. I consider my self fortunate, never having had a weight or compulsive eating problem. Is it easy? Absolutely not. There is slippage to some degree. Learn from it and go on. To avoid despair, we go out once a month to a fine restaurant that offers something unique. Seafood if possible, minimizing the sauces. This gives me something to look forward to as a reward. It reinforces the will power. Yeah, we share a dessert. I also fast occasionally (usually once a month)and not more that 48 hrs. I do this as an exercise and not to punish myself. I find that variety helps-I recommend the Mayo Clinic/ Sonoma cookbook. Great ideas, healthy, easily modified. Again, I agree with Walford,on working into CRON and developing the concepts into your thoughts and actions gradually rather that all at once. Hope this has been of value to someone. Good health to you all.
Guest guest
Hi! My name is . I am a 46 year old vegan who has just discovered CRON within the past few weeks, but has been approaching diet from the perspective of reduced caloric intake, with increased nutrition, for more than a year now. Prior to undertaking CRON a few weeks ago, my informal approach resulted in me losing 70 lbs. and overcoming allergies, back pain, panic attacks, depression, and elevated blood pressure. Over the past year, I have been surrounded by family and co-workers who have battled flu and cold symptoms; I have had no such bouts. Last week I took my granddaughter to the playground and I played as I never have before in my 46 years. I do an hour of yoga every morning, walk throughout the day, and do toning work with weights in the evening. I have never felt better in my life! CRON is going well for me. I have added some nutrionally charged foods to my diet and have lost three pounds in the past 3 weeks. I keep a log of what I eat along with the nutrition it provides. I feel absolutely wonderful. If I do not succeed in adding years to my life, I will have, at least, added life to my years! Thanks for being here - I look forward to learning from, and sharing with, the members of this group! > Newbies and lurkers, please post and introduce yourselves. Guest guest
Welcome and thanks for telling us about yourself. Wow CRON has really been a panacea for you! Just wondering if some of your symptoms were due to allergies to foods that you now may have eliminated from your diet. We have no evidence that I know of (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that CRON improves many of the problems you had (allergies, panic attacks, depression). If you lost a lot of weight that could account for the improvement in your back pain. The improvement in BP is of course pretty classic. I have never noticed that I feel much differently than before. I wish I did have that sense of enhanced well-being. I do notice that I am healthier and rarely get sick now. Colds are virtually a thing of the past. I'd love to hear if others have that feeling of well-being that I find to be elusive . Any suggestions on how to achieve it are welcomed. on 3/26/2003 1:39 PM, fmaural at no0ne2b@... wrote: > Hi! Guest guest
I've posted here before, but never a formal introduction, so here goes: I'm 19, also vegan, originally from Toronto, currently attending university in the states. Started both CRON and veganism in January -- was vegetarian for 12 years before that. I think that there was an attitude change and increased consciousness of eating, and that the attitude necessary to maintain this kind of lifestyle is one that maybe promotes a feeling of wellbeing. If one feels lousy about a lot of things, it's harder to stay on track, you know? And if one is eating a lot of very sugary garbage, that can contribute to lulls and such. So I'd agree with the feeling of wellbeing part, though for perhaps different reasons. > > > Hi! My name is . My experience was similar to 's. Perhaps Francesca was healthier before CRON than we were. I was pretty deficient in vitamins, minerals, and proteins and 20 pounds overweight by normal standards. Compared to now my energy level was much lower. I had acid reflux, arthritis in my hands, various skin problems, some anxiety and concentration problems. My mood was not as good as it is now. I don't think all the improvements are due to CR - many are due to ON. I used to eat a lot of refined wheat and sugar. I eat almost no wheat or sugar now. I've also had IgG allergy testing and eliminated milk, yeast, and sunflower seed oil from my diet. This also seems to have helped. We have some vegan CRONies - but it's not the easiest diet to follow! - what are your protein sources? There's been discussion in the past that has indicated that protein requirements go up when you cut calories. I'm trying to increase my protein from 65 to 90 grams per day right now. I think I feel even better at the higher level.
Guest guest
Hello, Francesca! I attribute my results to ALL of the steps I have taken, acting in concert with one another. CRON is certainly a critical element, but is not alone. Having started out as a vegetarian consuming dairy, I believe my allergy symptoms were alleviated, in large part, by the elimination of dairy from my diet; there has been no other significant elimination of food types. When I started to consider nutritional content in the foods I consumed, I added oils rich in essential fatty acids (omega-3's and -6's.) It has been suggested that omega-3's, in particular, may alleviate panic attacks and depression, being utilzed neurologically. I also agree with you that the weight loss has been crucial to relieving my back pain; in addition, in conjunction with yoga, meditation, and exercise, the weight loss has contributed to flexibilty, strength, and stamina. In turn, there is a joy and grace, in both motion and stillness, that has resulted and is now the source of my overall sense of well being. Thanks for the warm welcome! Take care. > > > Hi! Guest guest
Hi, ! My protein sources run the gamut - rice, beans, soy, vegetables,...any place I can find protein! I am currently at 2,200 calories per day and I aim for 82.5 grams of protein. > Francesca said: > > >I have never noticed that I feel much differently than before. Guest guest
: thanks. I got a hint of your success in your words below. I used to do yoga but stopped. I don't meditate. I walk daily and lift light weights every other day. So maybe the answer is the yoga/meditation to round out one's sense of well-being!!!! I hope I can fit it in - sounds like it's worth the effort. on 3/28/2003 1:37 PM, fmaural at no0ne2b@... wrote: > I also agree with you that the weight loss has been crucial to > relieving my back pain; in addition, in conjunction with yoga, > meditation, and exercise, the weight loss has contributed to > flexibilty, strength, and stamina.
