Guest guest
Just wanted to let you know that I was interviewed by Grainger from Elle magazine for an article on scoliosis that is supposed to be coming out late September. He had interviewed some doctors in Toronto area and he wanted a patient's perpective. I had given him the names of a couple of other people that were willing but since I was president of the Scoliosis Assocation of British Columbia, he thought I could also speak for other's that I know about. This is a national magazine with, I believe, international connections. Hope this means that scoliosis is starting to be recognized by the public more and that this will create an even greater awareness. Guest guest
This is great for us who have had scoliosis and will live with it for the rest of our lives. Testing for scoliosis is very sparatic in the schools around here where I live. I will be waiting to read the article. Guest guest
The moderator of this group... yours truly is Canadian. There are actually quite a few Canadians on this group. Services are spotty in this country. It's nice to know that someone in Canada is taking an interest in this. The last article I read was last year in MacLean's magazine. Most of the article was about bracing however... I believe that unless you are in Montreal, Vancouver or Toronto getting quality care for scoliosis surgery is rather spotty in this country. I know in the Maritimes it's pretty difficult to find anyone that knows about adults with flat back syndrome or anything to do with revision. Guest guest
I hope I've done Canadians proud in the article. I live on Vancouver Island and have been to the Vancouver Spine Clinic, two years ago. I was not impressed with the surgeon that I saw, since he had his own definition of Flatback and have heard from others who saw him that agree. , I missed that article in MacLean's, do you still have it? If so, would you be willing to send me a copy, privately? Guest guest
Sometimes it is better to go to the big cities for care. When I injured my lower back I went to a doctor in borough Ontario where I live and when he found out I had Harrington Rods I was treated like I had a bad disease. I ended up going to Toronto to get help. I had my surgery in 1966 and had a wonderful doctor and excellent care for being a small town country girl. I have never had any problems with the surgery areas. I work full time-have had two successful pregnancies--I live life to the fullest. The only things that I cannot do is sommorsaults (not spelled right) and horse back riding but I dont need to do these. Dr Hall who did my surgery told me that nothing should stand in my way--the bars will always be there so enjoy myself and live. Guest guest
Dear Diane, I think it's terrific that you've had such a great outcome following your surgery and that you are living life to the fullest. You mentioned that your surgery was performed in 1966 -- what part of your spine was fused? Do you have any discomfort whatsoever -- muscle tightness, degenerating discs, etc.? Is there any type of physical therapy or exercises that you do that keep you in such good condition? You also said that you work F/T -- what type of work do you do? I don't live too far from you, I'm in Newmarket. Many thanks, > > This is great for us who have had scoliosis and will live with it for the rest of our lives. Guest guest
my rods run the whole of my back. The only pain and it is not really a pain is I can tell you when it is going to rain but that is more arthritis. I also had a bone graft done from my rear to my shoulder blade and a rib taken out of my lung. I had a lump under my armpit that went away after surgery also. The only exercise that I do is chase after my four grandchildren 11,10.9 and 3 thats enough to keep anyone in shape. But to do anything else no. I am a secratary at Trent University and am on my feet alot during the day going from college to college and runninr around getting things for the students. When I come from work I work in my husbands business and help him. He has his own business doing small engine sales and service--so we help customers lift their lawnmowers out of cars, trucks, put parts away, do cash whatever needs to be done. My husband has an uncle in Newmarket and some cousins also but with his business our only free day is Sunday and if the weather is good he goes flying in his plane. Since you are President, is this something you started? I'd like to hear about it and what you do. I was reading one of your e-mails and you wrote that your surgeon is Dr. Rand. Is he the same doctor as mine, Dr. Rand in Boston?? Dr. Rand did three of my surgeries last year and he is doing another one next month, October. I thought it was really interesting that we possibly have the same doctor and you live so far away. Sharon
