June 1, 1999 - MOTION SICKNESS

Hello List members:

I have been told this by several people.

If you're prone to motion sickness, try taking ginger (Zingiber

officinale) before you set out on your next trip.

Although it's not clear precisely how it works, both laboratory

and clinical studies have found that ginger can help alleviate

motion sickness. And it's not just a case of 'mind over

matter' either, since ginger has even been shown in animal

studies to guard against the effects of motion-induced nausea.

To prevent motion sickness, you should take between 500 mg and

2,000 mg of the powdered root of ginger. For best results, you

should start taking it several hours before your journey.

So for all those boat trips, train trips, airplane rides that might

come in handy (smiles)
