Guest guest
Yoga may very well be the ideal exercise for max benefit vs, min caloric burn... I am not aware of any scientific study to determine when too much exercise begins to shorten lifespan in the context of CR, but I'm sure there is a threshold, or else there'd be a bunch of 120 year old triatheletes running around. Since I'm only 55, I will continue my 15 miles a week of jogging and weight training, and pick-up basketball games... for now, but it's a QOL rather than max lifespan decision. I've been vegetarian for 12 yrs. The last yr was my 3rd CR year. Let me tell you it's still in my strong opinion turn to CR was my best decision! As i become more experienced in CR i'd like to develop that excercises which are fully harmonize with CR. IMO theoretically the best excercise should be that which takes less cal. consumption pluscan deliver fresh oxigen into each cells of our bodyand generates increased metabolism for each cells. If this true we have to take care beside of our muscules with our brain and the nervous system also! Used to i run 3 miles 4 times a week plus a 40 minutes various excercises daily. I've burnt 300 cal daily by this way. I gave it up last yr. I don't want to burn so much. The existing questions are: What is the optimal or minimal cal level we should burn by excercises? Which excercises can give us the minimal cal burn with maximal longevity effects? Is it the Yoga? What is the best for the body and for the brain and the nervous system? Now i have 1400-1500 cal daily intake. I'm not going to increase it.

Maybe if you only do the passive asanas. Do a few sun salutations and you soon start to sweat - and doing a fair volume of vigorous poses is recommended if you're trying to improve flexibility - since stretching cold muscles is more dangerous and less effective. I'm inclined to think that Tai Chi, Chi Kung and the like beat yoga on the " few calories " front. On the other hand I think that's not a terribly useful criterion on which to judge exercise regimes - even for CRONies. After all, the fewest calories are probably spent by quietly lying down and closing your eyes ;-) Personally I currently devote about 90% of my " voluntary exercise " budget to hatha yoga.
