How about the death rate? Do you know if the statistics are correct or

underreported? Man, as if there weren't enough to worry about ..........

Suz,

I think it is commendable that your friend offered to quarantine

himself. I have been appalled at parents who take their obviously

sick children to stores and homes with other children. I observed

this while raising my own children and more recently with my

grandchildren.

My daughter's neighbor took her son with a fever to go shopping for

no other reason than she did not choose to be confined that day.

Heroic efforts to show up at work when sick can actually be

detrimental to the entire work force. True, some childhood and adult

illnesses are not critical; however, they can be critical to some

children or those with lowered immune systems.

Suz,

I own almost every CD cut by the Shaw chorale!

Anybody who sings with the Chorale knows how to sing up a

storm of crowd-pleasing melodic euphonic hits!

Lucy, you bring up a good point. We

Americans like to think it's virtuous to keep on

going when we're sick, and usually don't

consider what effect our stoicism has on others.

There's always a special award at the end of

the school year for " perfect attendance. "

Maybe you've seen the recent cold

pill commerical that takes place in a discount

department store, wherein the " Employee of the

Month...again " is cheerfully going about her job

with a headcold. It's bad enough that some of

these illnesses are communicable before you

realize you're sick.

Some years back I was singing with the

Shaw chorale in Atlanta. I remember the time

when one alto showed up for rehearsal with a

nasty cold. She was sooo terrified of missing a rehearsal. Shaw had strict

rules about how many

rehearsals you could miss, and she wasn't so strong of a musician that he'd

have bent the rules for

her. By the time of our performance, the whole alto line was practically

missing from Poulenc's

Gloria. They were ALL sick. If anybody got sick, there was a certain

physician we were supposed to

see who would prescribe an artillery of drugs to get us singing again. Only

in America.

Front page story today in the Washington Post reports that SARs now

threatens to spiral out of control in Taiwan, although there had been

previous reports that it was under control. 65 new cases reported yesterday

- a one day record, and 55 today. Officials are also investigating almost

1000 suspected cases.
