Guest guest
Lex: your sense of humor is delightful!!! First of all it's hard with kids, period. Especially when they're bringing home Halloween candy under your nose. We've all been there but it gets easier once you actually start. After a few months it becomes second nature like any habit. I too loved sweets. I now substitute artificial sweetner in my coffee and I eat the low cal sugar free ice cream now on the market which is delicious, (I try to keep it in moderation) and other such foods like sugar free jams, etc. There are also non-sugar sweet snacks in the diabetic and health foods sections of your supermarket. Just watch the calories!!! The trouble with sugar is not only the rise in blood sugar and all that, but sugar MAKES YOU HUNGRIER!!! Thus you are playing a losing game if you keep eating sugar, but you can still get that delicious taste with sugar substitutes which don't have that undesirable effect. Our recipe folder/file has many easy to prepare recipes. I keep it KISS myself because if I had to fuss a lot, I'd probably find that the diet is too much trouble. Vegetables and fruits are best if eaten as close to natural as possible. Add an easy to prepare protein (poultry, eggs, yogurt, rice and beans etc.) and you've got a meal. I hope this helps. Guest guest
I have similar problems. Steamed broccoli and salmon are part of CR, but Dr. Pepper isn't. Heh. Now I just need to read through the 2773 unread messages in my CR folder, and I'll be back on track! --. ----- Original Message ----- From: ASHRAF MABROUK Sent: Wednesday, April 09, 2003 2:23 PM Subject: [ ] Having Trouble Starting CR I have been a " CRonie wannbie " for over a year now. I completely agree with the CR lifestlyle and I have read 2 of Walford's books (Beyond the 120 Yr Diet & Anti-Aging Plan). My problem is starting the plan. I have 2 main problems: #1 - I have a severe sugar addication, especially between Halloween candy season and Easter candy season (I am not Christian, I only celebrate the candy). I seem to do OK if I stop sugar cold turkey, but eventually I start to eat healthier sweets which eventually leads to an unhealthy sugar binge, and then it's all over. I can't do moderation. The frustrating part is that I love healthy food, too. I will gladly eat a kale and egg white omelette for dinner, I just need a peppermint patty for dessert. If they had a sugar rehab center, I would check myself in. My only saving grace right now is excercise - I run about 9 miles per week and do some weight training at a gym about 3 days per week. Problem #2 is that I can't seem to manage my time right in order to prepare healthy food. I work 55 hours a week and have 2 kids (ages 6 and 2 1/2) - On the weekdays I get home after picking up the kids at 6 pm, and I am too tired to cook. I like the idea of spending all day Sunday preparing a week's worth of meals and freezing them, but that robs me of precious time with the kids and husband that I don't get during the week. I have recipes galore, but they all involve coordinating food shopping and menu planning, and many of the recipies in Walford's books are quite time consuming. Even preparing salads is laborious - I need quick and easy. I wish I could buy ready made CR meals and frozen megamuffins. Also, when I do eat healthy, I can't get the kids to follow suit (although I substituted whole wheat spaghetti the other day and they didn't notice) I know it' wrong, but it's easier to give them 'bad' food to minimize the hassles an d get them to eat anything at all. And my husband's favorite food is meat (but at least he likes fish) - so sometimes we have 3 different meals at the same time. Too many times we resort to pizza or Chinese takeout. Are there any busy CRonie moms with young kids out there that have any tips for me? I have gone through some of the CR aids/tips file - I think Suz's food variety checklist is great - but I also need a structured daily plan than I can prepare and shop for realistically. I'm going to make a last ditch effort this weekend to stop poisoning my body with sugar, really put aside some time to do some food planning and to get my nutrition under control.
