Long ago, Crawford and Marsh theorised that nutritional constraints are important in determining what structures organisms can afford to build. Looking at human beings they concluded that rapid increased availability of EFAs may have been a top factor that allowed brain growth among our ancestors to take place - and pointed the finger at new diets - especially seafood diets. http://www.nutrition4health.org/NOHAnews/NNF91CrawfordFDFE.html has some more details.
