Guest guest
Francesca, It works for me for about a month (if I take it that long), but then I develop a little tolerance and need to get off it. I've found it works for short term. Not a one day wonder. Regards, A. Francesca Skelton <fskelton@... support group < > om> cc: Subject: [ ] sleep: melatonin/valerian combo 10/16/2002 06:29 AM Please respond to Last nite (the second nite in a row) I had trouble sleeping. I even took a prescription sleeping pill which didn't work. I then tried the Valerian/melatonin combination recommended by Hipp. It worked!! I have enough of the two substances for a short while and then have to reorder. In the event it continues to do the job, anyone have good sources for these products? Here's hoping it wasn't a one day wonder.
Guest guest
bob: good to hear from you! Being that my prescription sleeping pills are no longer working, what IS working for you these days? or arent you sleeping? Maybe changing off between the two is the answer? on 10/16/2002 10:01 AM, robert.apple@... at robert.apple@... wrote: > Francesca, It works for me for about a month (if I take it that long), but > then I develop a little tolerance and need to get off it. Guest guest
I take 15 mg Remeron and 3 to 5 mg melatonin. When my sleep starts to suffer, I take a large dose of valarian. (I once read a study that showed the threshold levels of valarian are higher than originally thought), but I never have a problem with any side effects. In fact, I can take a large dose for about a month without tolerance kicking in. Then, If I wanted, I would change to KAVA, but I've never had to take it that long. Another thing I do is restrict my sleep and sometimes take a HOT! bath before going down. Also, I keep my room relatively cool at night. It all REALLY helps. I have found that sleep restriction DOES help though it isn't all that easy. (Go figure. You can't sleep, so stop trying. Who would of thought this would actually improve sleep.) If you want to crash, cut your sleep down 2 hours a night and after about 3 days, you feel like hell, but when you hit the pillow, you sleep quickly. At least this is the case with me. I've read a number of sleep aid books, and one called " No More Sleepless Nights " , the author explains that in all his years of study, he has never met a single person who didn't get SOME sleep every night. Sometimes its as little as 2 hours, but EVERYONE does sleep. Knowing that helps me to not stress it, and to focus on the quality of sleep instead of the quantity. With that in mind, and using sleep restriction and careful use of supplements like Valarian, Hops, Camomile, Kava, Melatonin, and Remeron, I have had pretty good sleep control over the last couple of years. When things start to go wrong in this area, I take steps to make corrections with environment in my room, exercise in my day, eating habits before going to bed, sleep restriction, and when needed, the use of supplements. I have had a number of times when I've had unrefreshing sleep for a night and even two nights at a time, but when I do those things listed above, I can't recall a single time in the past 2 years where I've had a third night that was poor. Hope this helps. Regards, A. Francesca Skelton <fskelton@... < > om> cc: Subject: Re: [ ] sleep: melatonin/valerian combo 10/16/2002 08:03 AM Please respond to bob: good to hear from you! Guest guest
Perhaps I'm lucky but the few times I've experienced problems sleeping, usually related to anticipation of some stressful event or over stimulation (coffee/exercise), the next night I had no trouble sleeping. Kind of like the lack of cat skeletons in trees despite all the cats that get stuck in them... cat's eventually come down and you will eventually get your sleep, hopefully not while you're driving.
