Atkins definitely takes weight off. The question is: is it good for long

term health and longevity? Hard to believe that ingesting all that fat and

no doubt missing some of the nutrients often discussed here that are present

in abundance in fruits and veggies, could be long term healthy. The lowered

cholesterol is indeed surprising.

It’s been discussed on the other

list. Lo(o)sing weight is a sure way of lowering cholesterol, so there’s

no real surprise here. Other than that, Atkins is probably not optimal because

you do not get enough of the plant goodies. A Zone like diet, or even somewhat

less carbs is fine. Fat is not a problem if you limit yourself to healthy fats,

like nuts and seeds (while trying to maintain a good W6/W3 ratio). Obviously,

one needs to avoid processed foods, so most of the bad fats are out. Atkins “by

the book” is not very good, but a modified Atkins (avoiding processed

foods) is a very good way to start CRONing, but carb intake should eventually

go up to about 30-40% of diet.

Micky.
