Guest guest
hi are you having a total hip or knee? I am having total ankle replacement next Tueday, at Glenbrook. I am getting anxious, but also feeling sooo ready! maureen in chicago Getting Ready Yesterday I attended a two-hour joint replacement pre-surgery class at Northwestern Memorial Hosp in Chicago. It was an excellent session with an ortho nurse, OT, PT and discharge nurse. They went through the whole process, day by day, from the day of surgery to the day you go home and also discussed home health care and other things for afterwards. There was plenty of time for questions, both in the group and individually. I feel so much more confident about the whole thing ... one thing I found particularly interesting is they don't want anyone taking a walker home from the hospital. They believe everyone should leave on crutches as people have a more normal gait that way. I wish everyone was able to go to such an excellent and caring facility! Three weeks and counting for me ... Guest guest
I'm having RTHR on Jan 28th. Can't wait! Yesterday someone told me I was treating this whole thing like an adventure and that is exactly how I feel. Good luck on Tues. Keep us all posted on outcome. > hi > > are you having a total hip or knee? > > I am having total ankle replacement next Tueday, at Glenbrook. Guest guest
Jeri and Donna, I know you guys are in the final countdown days. I don't think I know of too many people that were not pretty anxious or nervous at your point...so please don't feel the need to apologize for giving voice to whatever comes to mind. I am sure you have already found it, but if not, way back when I posted a question to the group about what they thought I needed to bring to the hospital before I went in. I got back so many great responses that I captured them in a document and it is in the files section today. You will find it at the bottom of the list titled " What Goes to the Hospital " . If you want to check your bags against the suggestions now is the time! Especially as it is winter (and was then for me) don't go in without a roll of chapstick. The air tends toward super dry in hospitals and the OR's are icey cold ...cracked lips are almost a guarantee. Jeri...if your husband is already planning on updating your friends and family via email anyway, I would be glad to receive those posts at my email (cammaltby@...) and I will repost them for the group. If you have the hospital and/or info and can give it to us now we can check and see if we will be able to send you guys ecards which many hospitals do these days. Donna, I think you said Edie would let us know how you are doing, but I am happy to repost updates for you too if necessary. Sending you calming good wishes, Cam
Guest guest
I never had the CPM my doctor doesn't use them. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry getting ready Hey All, Well, I am now less than 4 weeks until my bilateral knee replacements. I started a " Prehab " program yesterday. It is pretty nice - 4 private sessions with a therapist for only $35 total! Each about 45 minutes long. He will be showing me exercises to do before and after the surgery, OT stuff, and give me ideas for when I go home. A lot I kind of know since I have already had a hip replacement. Some of the exercises I can barely do because of the horrible condition of my knees. I will only do what I can. I am NOT going to hurt myself further. I still have to make it 4 more weeks. I have 12 band concerts left to play and I have to get my house ready. I will give my second unit of blood on Monday and I will see my family doctor and dentist in the next couple of weeks to get the go ahead from them. I am trying to eat well and consume more Vitamin K than usual to keep my iron high enough. When you all started out patient therapy for knees, did your PT place have any sort of CPM machine? I know one place I have seen does have it, but others do not. I don't know how important it might be at that point. I am guessing the therpist is basically " the machine " by pushing your knee(s) to stretch and bend. Any other suggestions from bilateral knee people especially would be appreciated. Thanks! in PA THR - 7/2007 Bilateral TKR - 7/22/2010 ------------------------------------
Guest guest
I had CPM in the hospital both surgeries and it was great. With the second they had me rent one. I used it and it felt good to have it move my legs; but I sent it back early as I really didn't need it -- got a good flexion early on. Jackie -- Jackie on Jackiett@... Guest guest
Well, you are doing all the right things. I had the machine in hospital, and loved it! I was in the minority. After you get home, you should be able to do all the machine does by yourself. Best of luck! We are all rooting for you!
