Guest guest
Hi Francesca, There is a hypertension gene, yes. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a weight gene, although there may be such. Weight control slows the rate of BP rise. If you exercise test 100 40yo people you find 35% will show a higher BP rise during exercise. 90% of those in 10 yrs will have HTN as defined by 140/90. The other 10%, it is my guess they have controlled their weight (and maybe sodium intake) to delay the rise. Recognize that not all weight gainers get HTN. I've met some very obese (looking) people that don't have it. Also, some people that control their weight and exercise, still have HTN. I talked to one 35 yo that ran miles, swam miles per week at 142# that had HTN. That's why it's called essential (idiopathic). I have a son at 6' - 145# - 135/88 - not quite there yet. The other thing I've noticed is those that have other problems such as diabetes, kidney disease do not have the same reactions that I have to sodium, exercise, foods. I don't have those other things and I think I'm in pretty good shape for 67yo, yet I still have this thing. At the point I am right now I think I could drop to 145#, run 5 miles per day, restrict sodium (I also restrict fat), and still have high blood pressure. Some think it's atherosclerosis, since it was correlated in teens (Bogalusa Heart Study), that showed even at 13 there was evidence of athero and higher blood pressure. I think it's a mitochondria cell restriction thing. Regards. ----- Original Message ----- From: Francesca Skelton Sent: Wednesday, May 07, 2003 12:02 PM Subject: Re: [ ] fat gene?
