Guest guest
Hello Suz and CR ALL: Thanks for the topical summary -- about the subject of " Osteoporosis in Men " , in the Tufts Health Newsletter!! One item of interest that I wonder about, which was summarized thus: > * The drugs used to treat osteoporosis are > equally effective in men as in women. This topic has come under discussion previously, and has been challenged (or at least questioned), because of the hormonal differences that exist between men and women. ALL drugs for osteoporosis? Or just certain categories (which categories?)? Yet most osteoporosis drugs today are non-hormonal. Logically, they should work for men and women equally. I am a man ... taking osteoporosis drugs (Fosamax) that are proven in women. Tests on men are currently being conducted, but no proven male test results are solidly available at this time. Could we see the actual paragraph in full context, in order to clarify and fortify the point of " equally effective in men as in women? Ie, see the particular paragraph or section that contains this information quoted in full within its own specific native context? Osteoporosis has been of sincere interest to many. If we see a reputable source, such as Tufts University publish it in their Health Newsletter, then we will feel much better. :-) Thanks! -- Warren
Guest guest
Oh dear. I knew you were going to call me out on that one, Warren! (heh heh) This wasn't much of an article, actually, but an interesting little "interview" with Orwoll, MD, professor of medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University. Maybe you could reach Dr. Orwoll??? The article only says this (and it is the concluding sentence): The good news, says Dr. Orwoll: "Just about all of the drugs that work to combat osteopororsis in women--Fosamax, Actonel, Forteo--are just as effective in men." The Tufts Newsletter generally covers one or two topics in depth each month, and merely hits upon several others. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of their in-depth reports. How are you doing with Fosamax? Any news to report yet? oxoxo Suz
Guest guest
Hello Suz and CR ALL: The news is good about Fosamax. Yes, good improvement (about 5 percent measured by DEXA in two years time), for my osteoporosis. Most people will LOSE 2 or 3 percent in that time. So the difference is about 8 percent -- significant for weak bones like mine. I had osteoporosis PRIOR to CR, and it was the medical testing I did when starting CR that alerted me, along with your help Suz. Thanks for your interest and personal commitment to helping us (all). -- Warren ========================= ================== -----Original Message----- From: Suzanne Cart [mailto:massuz@...] Sent: Wednesday, July 30, 2003 12:26 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Osteoporosis Medications and Tufts Newsletter Oh dear.
