Warren: I wanted to read about "Men and Osteoporosis" in the Tufts University Health and Nutrition Newsletter. Do you have to pay and subscribe to get this article?

Suz: Yep, I guess they expect you to buy their newsletter. Drat. But here are the highlights of the article "More Men at Osteoporosis Risk than Commonly Believed." I'm sure there's nothing here you didn't already know, Warren.

*One in eight men over 50 will suffer a hip fracture resulting from osteoporosis.

*Screening isn't done nearly as routinely in men as in women. (This issue is the thrust of the article.)

*"What puts men at risk for osteoporosis is different from what makes women vulnerable. "Men's osteopororsis is often the oucome of another illness, especially one that requires treatment with drugs like corticosteroids or anticonvulsants. Both are notorious for thinning bone."

*Heavy tobacco and alcohol use (more common in men than in women) increase the risk for osteoporosis.

*Men receviing androgen ablation therapy for prostate cancer lose bone quickly.

*Heel ultrasounds in pharmacies are usually meaningless to men because they compare your score to a female reference population.

*The drugs used to treat osteoporosis are equally effective in men as in women.
