My daughter gave me a similar one for xmas. It gives about the same (26% fat) for everyone I try it one, including my 190# weightlifter son, my 110 # daughter, my 145# 65yo wife, and me at 18% guessed at by caliper. I just have a feeling that bone density measuring might be equally challenging.

It has a very accurate clock, but so does my pedometer which I find much more useful.

Regards.

Subject: [ ] Home Bone-Density Testing?

Has anyone heard of or tried this product? The Body Composition Analyzer (BCA)http://www.slimstep.com/bca.htmIt purports to measure one's body fat, muscle mass, hydration, and most relevant to CRONies, bone mass:http://www.slimstep.com/bca-pg2.htmIt uses "advanced bio-impedance analysis." I used to use a similar hand-held device that tests body fat percentage that was available for use at a local store until my body fat dropped so low itsays it's too low to measure. The BCA can only measure body fat down to 5%, so it's probably not useful for body-fat measuring for CRONies. But the possibility of a reliable means for in-home bone-density testing is alluring. Hydration testing might also be useful. It sells for only $59:http://www.shoplifestyle.com/store/product.asp?dept%5Fid=9 & pf%5Fid=4945Any thoughts?

IAN: The hand-held electronic body-fat device I used

always gave readings consistent with my weight loss,

and I used it from pre-CR to several months ago when

I my body fat fell below its range. Moreover, I had a

body-fat % test at a local gym over a year ago with

one of those pinching devices, I guess a caliper, and

the results of that test exactly matched the electronic

hand-held device that I'm sure uses the same technology

as the Body Composition Analyzer linked-to above. Maybe

the device you have is just individually defective; but

that also raises the question of how often they fail?

It seems to me that bone-density testing is important

enough that one ought not rely entirely on some cheap

device. Therefore, if one should still do DEXA scans,

why bother purchasing the small device? I don't know.

At least one might be able to test its results versus

DEXA, but I'm not so sure they'd test the same areas.

I think the BCA would test arms and upper-body bones,

whereas DEXA scans usually test the hips and spine.
