I saw one report that raw fish parasites (fish got from eating snails) led

to liver cancer. But another suggested raw fish was protective against lung

and prostate cancer. The only thing I've seen recently about causing stomach

cancer was capsaicin (the hot in hot pepper).

The Japanese do have high rates of stomach cancer but I don't know if the

cause is known (is does drop after they move to the US). Theories range from

smoking to low vegetable intake, with nitrates also being suspect. Perhaps

that's your fish connection since nitrates were used to preserve fish before

refrigeration was available.

You're probably more likely to get cancer from overcooking meat than eating

it raw, but parasites are a plenty good reason to cook it, not to mention it

taste a lot better IMO.

Subject: [ ] more on raw meat

The Japanese have the highest rates of stomach cancer in the world. Many

scientists think it's because of the large amounts of raw fish they

consume.

the parasite thing is certainly an unresolved issue; i'm not a

dogmatic defender of raw meat and i realize there are good arguments on

both sides as to whether we should worry about parasites, so i agree it's

a valid concern. for now, my personal decision is not to worry about it

since i know the source of my meats and can be confident that the animals

were in good health and raised in good conditions, so parasites should be

rare, and a few parasites once in a while shouldn't be a big deal for a

healthy person.

in many cases i would agree that cooked meat tastes better than raw meat,

depending on source, cut, method, etc, but the overwhelming consensus i've

heard from folks who've experimented with this issue is that the most

delicious raw meat is a hundred times tastier than the most delicious

cooked meat, and my own experience confirms this. until i actually

experienced it myself, i would've never dreamt in a million years that it

could taste so good. i'm referring to beef and vension here. the good

stuff can melt in your mouth like good sashimi, but with a sweeter flavor.

it's unreal.

: Although you didn't get sick, it's not a good idea to do that.

I've also eaten some ' " questionables " sitting around my fridge (after I

began CR) and unlike you, have wound up food poisoning. Not near death's

door, by any means, but feeling pretty lousy . I've learned my lesson and

now throw out anything that doesn't look/smell/taste just right and I think

it prudent to advise others to do the same rather than risk 24 or 48 hours

wretching and throwing up or having diarrhea. It just ain't worth it.

A few parasites shouldn't be a big deal for a healthy person? Parasites

can't be eradicated by the immune system like bacteria or viruses.

Parasites are tapeworms, tics, pinworms, leeches, fleas, etc which will live

off whomever, whatever they can fasten themselves to.

i've eaten raw meat sitting in my

fridge for over a month that must have an awful lot of bacteria in it,

especially when it's grey and a little slimey, and i haven't had the

slightest response. try not cooking meat--it's really good that way.

i think they feed off stuff for a while and eventually leave. i

understand they increase the need for vitamin A. if i find out i have

parasites sometime, it'll be a great excuse to eat some liver.

by the way, there have been successful treatement of Crohn's disease by

feeding people tapeworms. there's still so much we don't understand.
