Guest guest
Hi all. I first heard of calorie restriction as a means of slowing down ageing a couple of years ago. But finally I'm determined to use it myself. But please can anyone tell me what is the current thinking in general among scientists and others who have studied CR. I mean is there absolutely no doubt that it works, or is there some scepticism. Thanks.
Guest guest
Ankios: it absolutely works in laboratory animals. In humans, we do have the sole example of the Okinawans, the longest lived, healthiest population in the world. Experiments with primates currently underway at NIH are proving to be successful as well. The majority of scientists are of the opinion that CRON is too difficult for most people. Our group has tried to dispel that notion and show that CRON need not be extreme or difficult. on 6/24/2003 7:28 PM, ankios at d.s60@... wrote: > Hi all. > > I first heard of calorie restriction as a means of slowing down > ageing a couple of years ago. Guest guest
There is no doubt among scientists that it works... on mice. There is skepticism and much debate over what is optimal for homo sapiens. The thrust of much of the research is into alternative paths to the same result, so we can have our cake and " eat it " too. That's where the big money is. No one will get rich just advising folks to eat less. What is a given is that eating too much is unhealthy. It's logical and there's anecdotal evidence that eating less is better. What is optimal is (AFAIK) unknown and individually probably influenced by your personal genome. Look at what your parents and their parents died from. Focus your diet for full nutrition while avoiding your known risk factors. Eat less (and exercise) in moderation, and continue to watch this space because this is definitely a work in process.
