Moderation can kill you J

I’m sorry; I could not resist. Please

excuse my sense of humor.

Below is an email sent to the “Los Angeles Gerontology Research Group”,

that claims:

" a new study published today said moderate exercise such as a

brisk walk

five times a week has no impact on the risk of dying from heart disease.

" Only

vigorous exercise such as jogging and hiking seems to make a difference”

They have no references though.

MYTH DEBUNKED ON

VALUE OF MODERATE EXERCISE

" Moderate exercise such as half-an-hour of brisk walking five-times-a-week

is

unlikely to prevent an early death from heart disease, " say

researchers. Current

UK guidelines recommend 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on at least

five-days-of-the-week to ward off premature death.

But a new study published today said moderate exercise

such as a brisk walk

five times a week has no impact on the risk of dying from heart disease.

" Only

vigorous exercise such as jogging and hiking seems to make a difference, "

says

Dr. Yarnell of Queens University in Belfast.

The researchers looked at almost 2,000 men in

Caerphilly, Wales, who when

recruited were aged [45-59]. None had any evidence of heart disease. The men

were

monitored over ten years and completed questionnaires on their medical

histories,

lifestyle, and activity levels.

The researchers defined light activities as walking, bowling, or sailing. Moderate

as golf, digging, or dancing. And heavy

as climbing stairs, swimming, or jogging.

During the study period, 252 men died, and more than

three-quarters of these

deaths were from Heart Disease and Stroke.
