Hi All,

A new PDF-available CR paper is:

Hursting SD, Lavigne JA, Berrigan D, Perkins SN, Barrett JC.

CALORIE RESTRICTION, AGING, AND CANCER PREVENTION: Mechanisms of Action and

Applicability to Humans.

Annu Rev Med. 2003;54:131-52.

PMID: 12525670 [PubMed - in process]

Overall, I would have liked to see some reports of CRON and other human CR

studies developing.

Reference 16 was of interest regarding human CR:

Chang S, Hursting SD, Contois JH, Strom SS, Yamamura Y, Babaian RJ, Troncoso

P, Scardino PS, Wheeler TM, Amos CI, Spitz MR.

Leptin and prostate cancer.

Prostate. 2001 Jan 1;46(1):62-7.

PMID: 11170133 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

I did like the ending:

“Given the extensive evidence concerning the benefits of moderate CR and

exercise (13), we suggest that preclinical studies and clinical trials

evaluate regimens that combine these lifestyle changes with mechanism-based

agents such as tamoxifen, IGF-1 inhibitors, or vaccines. As with most

chronic disease intervention strategies, it is likely that combination

approaches that maximize efficacy while minimizing adverse effects will be

most successful. Combination regimens could improve the efficacy of the

pharmacological or biological intervention, decrease adverse side effects,

and provide benefits for other health conditions related to overweight and

obesity. Good compliance to the lifestyle portions of the recently completed

Diabetes Prevention Program offers a model for successfully combining

pharmacological and lifestyle interventions (118). Future studies based on a

well-integrated biosystems perspective should greatly facilitate the

translation of CR research into strategies for effective human chronic

disease prevention.”
