Guest guest
I do yoga and try to weight lift 3 or more times a week. I mow the lawn for the exercise and try to walk 1/2 mile or more a day in addition to all the walking I do in the course of the day. I don't always achieve these goals every day though. on 8/5/2003 8:11 AM, paultheo2000 at paultheo2000@... wrote: > I'd like to know what other steps you guys take to maximize > health/longevity except for applying CRON. Guest guest
Sleep is important. A good book to read is The Promise of Sleep, by Dement MD. It offers useful advice. Stress reduction and exercise are useful. While some argue that exercise increases caloric load and is a negative, the immediate benefits of at least moderate exercise (resistance and cardio) are hard to ignore. When I was engaged in the rat race I also found exercise useful to mitigate job related stress. Positive social relationships correlate with positive health but I am not aware of scientific basis. Guest guest
Hi , I'm big on accident prevention, without being paranoid of course. Prevent what's going to kill you. Common sense things...seat belts, defensive driving. Don't weave in and out of traffic. Don't tail gate. Pay attention, be alert. Never continue driving when your eyelids feel heavy. Many people think that heavy-eyelid feeling is the first stage of drowsiness. Sleep researcher DeMent points out that heavy-eyelids are actually the LAST stage of WAKEFULNESS. Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. Wear sunscreen. I'm one of those idiots who reads the Darwin Awards and thinks, "Gee, I do THAT all the time! I could've died!" I'm not cautious by nature, so I've tried to become somewhat more safety conscience. Guest guest
Interesting you should bring up accidents. I always felt that one of the big reasons that women outlive men is that men are more daring in their youth and kill themselves off (car accidents, speeding, drinking, etc). The high testosterone and all in youths. Speaking of accidents, in some countries abroad , the car accident death rate is very high. In Israel where the ultra religious (a small but powerful group) have gotten a law passed where the traffic lights are turned off on the Sabbath - the vast majority of people (who are not that religious) drive anyway and more people have been killed in car accidents there than all wars that Israel has been in. On the Sabbath it's like the crazy bumper car ride in the amusement park with cars going every which way and beeping their brains out. A pedestrian crossing the street on the Sabbath is at quite a risk of being killed too. on 8/5/2003 1:55 PM, Suzanne Cart at massuz@... wrote: > Hi , > > I'm big on accident prevention, without being paranoid of course. Guest guest
Regarding relationships, stress and health, there is an area of research within health psychology called " psychoneuroimmunology " that responds to numerous interesting questions. The research generally pertains to the interaction of emotions/personality factors and immune functioning. Suzanne Segerstrom at UK, and Janis Keicolt-Glaser (not sure where) are two prominent researchers in this area. (I'm sure I've spelled Keicolt-Glaser incorrectly). Some random but memorable findings of this literature include things such as: laughing improves immune response, optimistic personality traits promote resistance to infection (when all other known relevant variables are controlled), talking to acquaintances increases the production of 5-HT (Serotonin). This research domain is growing rapidly in the last 5-10 years.
