After I cut carbs significantly, and added nuts, my HDL went up quite

significantly (from 55 to 105 mg/dl).

Very interesting. Could you please elaborate on what kind of carbs

you cut? And what kind of nuts you added? What an astonishing

number. I didn't realize anyone had an HDL reading of 105!!!

When your HDL was 105, may I ask what your LDL and triglycerides were?

Many thanks.

I cut out alot of fruit and some yogurt. Mostly dropped apples, grapes. I

haven't eaten grain much for years, anyway.

Increased blueberries and other berries. Nuts included walnuts, almonds,

hazelnuts, macadamia, pecans. I also increased ground flax seed a bit. Some

" high omega 3 " eggs, lots of fish, especially herring, salmon.

LDL remained fairly constant from high to low carb diet change at 36 mg/dl.

Triglycerides were not assessed.

I was rather suprised at the HDL also, but I've heard of higher levels also.

I dropped some fruit (mostly apples, grapes, melons), yogurt, starchy

vegetables. I've not eaten alot of grains for quite a while.

I added nuts, including walnuts, almonds, pecans, macadamia, hazelnuts, as

well as those nut-like legumes, peanuts. I also increased ground flax seeds,

fish (especially herring, salmon), added " high omega-3 " eggs.

LDL remained relatively constant at about 35-36 mg/dl.

Hi Chris:

Many thanks for that. I wonder if it is the type of fat in nuts that

raised your HDL. I have recently added some safflower oil to my diet

on a regular basis hoping it may raise my HDL (without changing

LDL). Results not yet in.

FWIW I suspect triglycerides may be more important than either LDL or

HDL, at least for males. This is based on the data for japanese

lipids levels and how they apparently change with age. But it is a

bit of a long story. (To avoid any doubt ..... 'low triglycerides'

is good IF this analysis is correct).

Hi Rodney-

On my low fat diet, I had completely avoided eating any nuts; whereas on the

low carb diet I ate fairly large quantities of them. I think they certainly

are part of the answer. Increased oily fish consuption probably also plays a

role, as, I think, does overall meal macronutrient ratio. I think low carb

diets usually result in lower triglycerides. I hope that is the case for me.

I will have to get my triglycerides tested at my next check-up (perhaps

within a week or so). I'll report the results when I have them.

Hi & ALL,

Maybe you ought to consider the quality or type of HDL you have by doing the following test. It would certainly be interesting to know exactly which HDL lipid increases you have gained. HDL2 is the best, but you need to take a specific blood test to determine this. Cost is $94 from Direct Labs.

See below:

The VAP Cholesterol Test

· Directly measures total cholesterol

· Directly measures HDL and

separates into HDL2 and HDL3

(HDL2 is the "best" cholesterol and

when low is a risk factor for CAD,

HDL3 is the least protective HDL).

This lipid test does much more than just the HDL above.

Yes, I'm curious about that, but, I'm also cheap, and I can't imagine I'm

really at serious risk of cardiovascular disease with the lipid profile I've

got currently.
