Brad: Welcome to the group! We don't have a specific recommendation and

everyone has his/her own ideas about this. It's a complex, ever-changing

subject. Actually lately we've been talking about how BAD oversupplemention

can be for you! I started out with many supplements and now only take

melatonin regularly.

I personally would recommend just a good " one a day " type vitamin supplement

if you feel this is necessary. As I said, I don't take one myself. With an

excellent diet, you can easily get all the rda's (even the difficult to find

ones such as zinc, vit d etc.)

I know I'm healthy because I rarely get sick.

Does this group have a selected ingredient list? Does this group

use a specific product(s) offered by Life Extension? I know Walford

suggests that supplements are necessary regardless of how well we eat.

Brad, I'm glad that you posted this message, as I have been thinking

about supplements a lot lately, and had been thinking of asking

everone one on this list to post their supplements, so we could all

compare.

Here is a list of the supplements I take, without dosage amounts

because I am at work and don't have the numbers in front of me:

In the morning:

Men's Multivitamin

Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Resveratrol

CoQ10

Selenium

A multi-nutrient for cognitive function (Ginko, DHA, Sage, etc.)

1 clove of garlic

In the evening:

Additional vitamin C and E

Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Resveratrol

CoQ10

Selenium

A multi-nutrient for cognitive function (Ginko, DHA, Sage, etc.)

I am also about to purchase and begin taking Carnosine.

I am considering purchasing my supplements from Life Extension as well.

For Rodney, I suggest you try to contract directly one or more of those experimenters via e mail. One, Weindruch at the U. of Wisconsin, is doing monkeys now but did do mice, and I know he has a web site. Should be easy to contact. He studied under Walford. Another is Mark P. Mattson, PhD. chief of the neurosciences lab at the National Institute on Aging. Peg

Hi Brad:

I am certainly no authority on nutritional supplements, but I do have

a couple of 'observations' that I think may be relevant.

First, when I initially decided to take some supplements - many years

ago - I did some calculations on two of them. One was folic acid,

and the other may have been vitamin E. What I calculated was how

much of the substance I would be consuming if I took one

tablet/capsule per week compared with the average (poorly fed) north

american.

What I found in both cases was that if I were to take one a week I

would be consuming approximately ten times as much as anyone who did

not take supplements. Then I asked myself: 'Is ten times as much

enough? Or do I really need seventy times as much? - taking it daily

instead of weekly'. I still don't know the answer. But the

conclusion I came to at the time was that daily might be a case of

overdosing. So the supplements I take I take once a week.

Second, in the CR experiments done on rats and mice where they were

found to live 50% longer than normally fed rats, what were they

feeding them? Were they feeding them simply a 40% less than normal

amount of regular lab chow? OR WERE THEY FEEDING THEM 40% LESS THAN

NORMAL LAB CHOW PLUS ALL KINDS OF ADDITIONAL NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS?

I don't know the answer to this either. But I would bet anyone here

a beer that it was just the chow. Without any elaborate list of

additional supplements. If so, and I plan in the next little while

to find out (can anyone refer me to articles on the rat/mice

experiments, please?), then that is telling us something I think.

I would be happy to list the supplements I take - about half a dozen

once a week - but I am far from sure it would be of value for anyone

else to read it : ^ )

Rodney.
