Guest guest
Hello Francesca and ALL: It's great to see some of my favorite fruits and veggies on the high ORAC (anti-oxidant) list. Does anyone know where there appears a list where the foods are ranked in terms of " Anti-oxidants per calorie " ? Some of the best fruits are high in calorie foods, and very sugary too (like prunes and raisins). -- Warren ============================== ============================= -----Original Message----- From: Francesca Skelton [mailto:fskelton@...] Sent: Saturday, October 04, 2003 6:56 AM support group Subject: [ ] File: Tops in Antioxidants During times of slow traffic it sometimes is a good idea to post some of our very useful files: Tops in Antioxidants The Hope Heart Institute February 10, 2001 ORAC* scores for 3.5 ounces FRUITS Prunes 5,770 Raisins 2,830 Blueberries 2,400 Strawberries 1,540 Raspberries 1,220 Plums 949 Oranges 750 Red grapes 739 Cherries 670 VEGETABLES Kale 1,770 Spinach 1,260 Brussels sprouts 980 Broccoli florets 890 Beets 840 Red bell peppers 710 Yellow corn 400 Eggplant 390 Carrots 210 *Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. The fruits and vegetables listed here are particularly high in antioxidants, but all fruits and vegetables contain valuable nutrients. The prunes and raisins were extremely tempting - but i realized that if i consumed this, sometime this afternoon, i would sense my sugar level plummeting, whereas on my present avoiding of high-sugar, i regularly go 14-18 hours between meals, with absolutely no problem. (One meal a day.) Another fear of these dried fruit foods, maybe irrational, is that the gummy sugars should be brushed off the teeth before much time passes. Isn't this a risk for tooth decay? Maybe not with our present regular hygene. I am always thinking of the terrible dental problems of the Anasazi, who ate a lot of sticky sweet corn. Guest guest
On cod liver oil use: After playing detective for years, I believe a combination of bone loss and hair loss on my part may be directly attributable to overconsumption of the retinnol form of Vitamin A in supplements, as opposed to beta carotene, this over many years . Being very athletic, big boned and never blonde and having taken calcium and Fosomax as well as Evista for years, I see this is the likely culprit. Since changing the supplement to one with much less vitamin A and only as beta carotene, and only taking that twice a week, my hair loss appears to have stopped. I have to wait two years for another bone dexascan. Cod liver oil is all bad vitamin A, I believe. Ironically, I never fracture despite some dramatic tumbles! I am a 70-year-old female so my reasoning may or may not be correct. Peg
Guest guest
Hello CR ALL: Courtesy of Tim Tyler, here is a tabular listing of ORAC per Calorie values --- (Column 3) of ORAC per gram values --- (Column 4) Values in the table are sorted by the ORAC/gm of Column 4. Look at Column 3 to see ORAC/Calorie: http://optimalhealth.cia.com.au/OracLevels.htm -- Warren =========================== ======================== On 05 Oct 2003, Warren wrote: ....
