Ok. Easy enough to do - thank you Warren. This is what I currently have as

the question: " What drew you to a CRON diet? " Listed are four choices: 1)

a preexisting medical condition 2) reading the literature 3) seeing Dr

Walford on tv or 4) other.

Please post any improvements, or suggestions to this question and the answer

options. We are allowed up to 10 options to check off and answer.

and then what? Did you read more about it, for example?

Weren't you told by your doctor (as you explained earlier) that it would

help your auto-immune condition? (which would fit under " pre-existing

medical condition " )

Ahhh, well-worded. I wonder, is the question more specifically:

1) " What is the #1 reason that motivated us to try a CRON diet,

after we learned about it " ?

or ...

2) " How did we find out about the CRON diet? "

I ask that, because per your suggestions below Francesca,

reading the CRON literature (choice 2) and seeing Dr Walford

on TV (choice 3) are ways to learn about CRON.

But a pre-existing medical condition (choice 1) is a reason

to begin a CRON diet, after we have learned about CRON.

Other possible #1 reasons to begin a CRON diet:

-- Loss of a loved one?

-- Desire to help spouse/family/friend by our example?

-- Matter of principle: Search for best diet, best health possible?

-- Personal desire to stay attractive and slim?

-- Desire to please spouse/family/loved one/others?

-- Needed a GOOD diet to control excess weight?

-- Fear of early death, with need to correct past errors?

-- Commitment to self/God, to be the best I can be?

-- Desire to live long, happy, and healthy as possible?

-- Fear of an illness/disease that would surely kill me?

-- Science of CR fascinated me?

-- So many benefits, I absolutely had to get serious?

-- So disgusted at myself, needed to change?

-- (What reasons are missing ??????)

-- Other reason (None of the above)

(1) How did you first learn about and get introduced to CR?

-- Need a list of ways to learn.

So many great questions Warren, perhaps instead of or in addition to a

poll, a text file should be created with all these questions. Then new

members of this community could answer them as an introduction.

Yes many belong in a database file. However when we once tried to get info

into the database, but there wasn't enough interest. Putting info into the

database is a bit more complicated for people than answering a poll and

perhaps that was the problem.

And we can only poll one question at a time. And as said previously, there

is only room for 10 options. I'm condensing Warren's post now.

Good ideas Warren. Why don't we start with your question #1?

learned about it " ? (One question per poll ). Some of your options

overlap. And we only have room for 10 anyway. How about these?

I accidently stumbled accross CRON while searching the internet for

nutritional information on ingredients to make dog food for the furball (now

that he is growing show coat...he really IS a furball).

Not exactly. My husband was interested in it first and brought it up.

My gastro asked what I was eating for my supposed crohn's/celiac disease

and I told

I was avoiding all celiac based food. He said I'd recommend CALORIE

RESTRICTION

also until all the tests were done. I mentioned CRON from my husband and he

said, SAME DIFFERENCE.

PS Didn't end up having either. It was a different autoimmune (thryoiditis)

disease that causes my troubles.

Inspiration of a loved one. My husband who has been on a CR diet all his

life, missed a heart transplant,

his surgeon's think because of the low requrements/demands he makes on his

nutritional system.

guess I'd just have to pick the single one that most applies.

Folks: I'll give this another day or so, in order that people that receive

the daily digest have a chance to respond. Then we'll set up the poll and

give instructions on how to vote. You will have the chance to respond to

more than one option.

Hello Francesca and CR ALL:

Regarding allowing more than one choice, it probably

would be OK. But if you allowed checking all of them,

many of us would simply choose ALL of them. I would!

Maybe if looking for the single PRIMARY motivator

to begin CR, add the following " catch all choice "

" -- So many benefits, I absolutely had to get serious. "

That means there is no one identifiable " primary reason " ,

but that there so much important about CR, that one became

motivated for many reasons (many of the above), with no one

single reason standing foremost.

Then everybody can still choose just one single reason,

and there is a catch-all if one can not identify an

overriding primary motivation for why one started CR.

I saw the piece about CRON in today's WSJ, in a special section on Hormone

Replacement Therapy.

The writer KELLYGREENE@... wrote a balanced overview of CRON and

detailed the state of the human trials now in preliminary stages.

I don't know that there was any new information but in general it was a fair

treatment, neither promoting nor discrediting CRON, just matter of factly

presenting the state of the practice.

IMO this is far better than the early articles which painted practice of

CRON as fringe behavior, even though it kind of is :-).

I have the article and if nobody can find an online version I can scan it

in, but I'd prefer to wait in case I can avoid doing so.

Since I follow the dietary restriction lifestyle, developed food

fanaticism, and consequently developed low-fat, low calorie,

temporarily inadequate nutrition and anorexia nervosa conditions, I

liked the quote put up by a long-suffering graduate student who

endured my picky nature:

to anorexia nervosa serious, or intended to be entertaining only?

If serious, do you think CR was in part a cause of it? Or was CR

perhaps chosen as an apparently respectable option AFTER you found

you were suffering anorexia?

Hi Rodney and ALL,

My reference to anorexia nervosa is and was serious. I have had

weight loss from 156 pounds to lows in the 80s, severe osteoporosis,

bronchitis, chronic laryngitis and pneumonia, the last of episode of

which led to glucose level of 1.1, consequent 7-hour coma and final

long-term disability status.

I believe CR led to anorexia.

I began with a BMI of about 21, a temporary irregular heart beat and

horrible family cardiac and cancer history. I first began Pritikin

dieting. I was on CR at a healthy weight and moderate CR for years

before the anorexia. The sense of control over this important aspect

of my life (how much I eat) and feelings of lack of control of the

rest seemed to be my clinical progression into anorexia.

I have read other posters mention their anorexia or more often

bulimia nervosa. I believe it is a risk to be considered in

practicing CR.

I really must say I very much appreciate your sharing that

information with us. It could not have been easy for you to do so I

suspect.

It is a warning I will very much keep in mind as I get further into

CR. It was not something I had previously realized could potentially

be a problem.
