Hello a.

I think your observations above are close to what happens for most

people.

But why feel " proud " of yourself for stopping the habit? You didn't

choose the habit originally. It was conditioned into you by

forces " outside " of you. And, similarly, the habit lost its

conditioning hold when *it* was ready to, not when " you " were (notice

that you " knew " it was wrong for you, and you wanted to stop it at a

particular time, but that didn't happen...the ending of that

particular habit took a long time to happen [your words]...it didn't

occur on " your " time schedule, but rather, on its on.).

This is what I've been pointing to in the past few posts. Changes

happen. But not, necessarily, when we want them to. Them seem to

occur at their own time, on their own schedule. Sometimes,

when " their " schedule coincides with our desire ( " I want to change

this NOW! " ), there arises the illusion that we had something to do

with the change (we say our will was strong enough). But that

conclusion seems to be a misinterpretation of what happens.

Just my two cents. :-)

I am proud when I stop negative habits whether they are overeating, or mellowing a bad temper, or whatever. I am proud because it takes will and focus to do so. If I hadn't recognized the waste of my overeating I may have never stopped. It was when I realized I wanted to change that it did. So I give myself the credit.

I think we all should feel good and proud when we give up negative habits for often, it's the negative habits that cause so much suffering!

*****Actually, a, it's not the negative habits that cause

suffering. It is our resistance to those negative habits that

produces the suffering.

Negative habits (or positive ones), in and of themselves, don't

contain suffering. It is our (mental) perspective, our " position " on

them, which produces the psychological dissonance that we label

as " suffering. "

A " negative " habit, once accepted and lived fully, no longer produces

suffering to the person embracing it. It may produce deleterious

effects on the body. I'm not suggesting otherwise.

What I'm pointing to is that the suffering is a function of mental

discord, and that is born from having a split perspective: " I am

doing this " and " I shouldn't be doing this. " It is in the disharmony

between these two thought-trains that suffering arises.
