Some mail clients or mail systems attach something to messages that kind of looks like an attachment, but actually only has some sort of routing data in it. It is not a hazard, but I don't have specific information about where this is actually happening in the process.

I have a friend that gets her mail at her work e-mail address, which is a defense-related agency. Recently, my direct e-mails to her have gotten through to her, and although I certainly hadn't attached anything, I was getting a message back from their mail system saying I had violated a rule against attachments. It appears however that she got the mail minus the 'attachment'.
