Guest guest
Hello Rodney and CR ALL: You have made a valid point. And very courteously. Your writing is objective and professional. I very much like it as an improvement that does portray a good solid perspective about CR. It accurately illustrates the research findings supporting a calorie restricted diet for humans. -- Warren =================================== ============================= On 16 Nov 2003, Rodney wrote: So, my suggestion is that rather than saying CR is the only scientifically proven way to improve health and longevity, that section of the home page might instead read something like: " A considerable body of serious scientific evidence now shows that, in every species so far studied, CR is the only method proven to extend maximum life span. In many species the extension in lifespan observed has been to the equivalent, in human terms, of an age of 155 years. At the same time the incidence of diseases of all kinds, including those accounting for the principal causes of death in humans - cancer and heart disease, is greatly reduced " . Guest guest
Rodney: I can't find any such place in BT120YD where Dr W acknowledges myriad ways of enhancing health and longevity. If you know where this section is, please post it. Such practises as smoking, radon-free environments etc. only guarantee that you'll avoid life shortening hazards. One can't claim that not smoking will " enhance " health - one can only say that you'll probably avoid dying prematurely. CRON is the only proven way to actually ENHANCE health. The others just help avoid premature death. However, as I told Rodney off-list, there is no ego involvement in the description of the group (which was put together by several of us). If others agree it can be changed. Perhaps we can take a poll on what most people would like to see in the description. on 11/16/2003 12:52 PM, Rodney at perspect1111@... wrote: > Indeed, my recollection is that in BT120YD Dr. Walford > acknowledges that there are myriad ways to to enhance health and > longevity. Guest guest
Hi Francesca: I am unable right now to consult the copy of BT120YD that I read. I am reporting that from memory. Even if I was able to look at it I do not remember in which section it appeared, so I might have to reread much of it before I found the quote. Obviously it would be much more satisfactory if I could give you the exact reference. It is possible, but not likely as it was a long time ago, that it came from the Scientific American Frontiers program with Alan Alda and Dr. Walford stuffing down a huge plateful of salad. Guest guest
Hi Francesca: Thinking about it a little more I think the passage may have been contained in the section where he was talking about the difference between 'squaring the survival curve', on the one hand, and extending the right side of the square/rectangle out further to the right. There are, I seem to remember him saying, many different things that can be done to help move closer to squaring the 110 year 'square'. But only one (CRON) that has been scientifically demonstrated to shift the right side of the square further to the right. I don't know if this helps. I will keep thinking! Guest guest
Hi Francesca: Perhaps this is what I am referring to: (p. 91) " but other measures may further help to square or rectangularize the survival curve. These measures deal with fat, fiber, and fitness, with having larger amounts of certain vitamins ... " " It looks like my 'myriad' was overstating it.
