Guest guest
Katrina: this is a wonderful discovery. In many cases, cinnamon can be substitued for a sweetner as it sweetens as well as actually aids in lowering blood sugar and has other health benefits. P.S. I have bought huge amounts of cinnamon powder in a Chinese grocery store near me for next to nothing. Look in the condiments/spices aisles for this unexpected bargain. on 11/28/2003 2:17 AM, Katrina at katnap@... wrote: > Cinnamon spice produces healthier blood The cinnamon has additional benefits. In the volunteers, it lowered blood levels of fats and " bad " cholesterol, which are also partly controlled by insulin. And in test tube experiments it neutralised free radicals, damaging chemicals which are elevated in diabetics.
Guest guest
For those who want an easy way to add cinnamon to their daily intake, I highly recommend the 'Hot Cinnamon Spice' tea by Harney & Sons. It is now my joint favourite tea (along with Fortnum and Mason's Earl Grey blend). The tea contains real cinnamon, not just the oil. The oil does not have the same benefits. http://www.harney.com/hotcinnamonspice.html It's not really a spicy tea, it's actually very sweet. Katrina. Guest guest
> Cinnamon spice produces healthier blood > > by Debora MacKenzie, New Scientist (24 Nov 2003) > Hi All, Here is the article. Cheers, Al. Diabetes Care. 2003 Dec;26(12):3215-3218. Cinnamon Improves Glucose and Lipids of People With Type 2 Diabetes. Khan A, Safdar M, Ali Khan MM, Khattak KN, RA. ...... -A total of 60 people with type 2 diabetes, 30 men and 30 women aged 52.2 +/- 6.32 years, were divided randomly into six groups. Groups 1, 2, and 3 consumed 1, 3, or 6 g of cinnamon daily, respectively, and groups 4, 5, and 6 were given placebo capsules corresponding to the number of capsules consumed for the three levels of cinnamon. The cinnamon was consumed for 40 days followed by a 20-day washout period. RESULTS:-After 40 days, all three levels of cinnamon reduced the mean fasting serum glucose (18-29%), triglyceride (23- 30%), LDL cholesterol (7-27%), and total cholesterol (12-26%) levels; no significant changes were noted in the placebo groups. Changes in HDL cholesterol were not significant. CONCLUSIONS:-The results of this study ....suggest that the inclusion of cinnamon in the diet of people with type 2 diabetes will reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
