Guest guest
Hi All, For your information is: http://www.wtnh.com/global/story.asp?s=1542592 & ClientType=Printable News Channel 8 Extra Calorie restricting diet (New Haven-WTNH, Nov. 26, 2003 11:25 PM) _ Many people count calories to lose weight, but can that approach also help you live a lot longer? The government says recent tests on what's called the Calorie Restriction Diet are promising and it's now investing millions in research. Watch the story by News Channel 8's Jocelyn Maminta For those watching what they eat Clair's Corner Copia in New Haven is a favorite spot. Low-fat nutritous meals draw a health conscious crowd at mealtime. " I want to stay young and healthy, " said Troy Belton. " I'd like to. " " I'm a vegetarian. I have been for 25 years and I watch what I eat and the quantity of what I eat, " said Jerry Feldman. But counting calories is taking on a new twist. Some people are going on the CR diet, which stands for calorie restriction. They're eating only nutrient rich foods hoping it will add years, even decades, to their lives. " I am taking in about 1,400 to 1,600 calories, " says Meredith Averill. " That's several hundred less than the average American woman. " " For a man of my size 5'11 1/2'', I weigh 131 pounds, " says McGlothin. " That's not very much. " The U.S. government is so intrigued by the CR diet and earlier tests on animals it will be spending $20 million for studies on humans. " Experiments in mice have been going on for several decades and have certainly shown that caloric restriction will extend lifespan, " said Dr. Evan Hadley, National Institutes of Health. But some, like nutritionist Tartamella-Kimmel, are worried some people will take it too far. " What is a calorie restriction? How much? Quite often people take it to the extreme -- all or nothing. " If you take it to the degree of restricting too many calories then you're looking at people missing out on vital nutrients in their diets, the opportunity to set people up to develop disorder eating habits. " Tartamella-Kimmel points out not eating enough is sometimes related chronic diseases such as osteoporisis. Those on the CR diet say you don't have to go to extremes to get results. They say you'll see health benefits by just cutting back 10 percent of the calories the average American consumes now. _____ Calorie Restriction Society http://www.calorierestriction.org/ Cheers, Al.
