I've been making breakfast smoothies for over 25 years, almost daily. The

ingredients have evolved over time. Initially, I used skim milk (1 cup) plus

a banana, plus museli (handfull), plus sweetenr (usually low/non-caloric).

Originally, I used aspartame as sweetener.

In its current low-carb form, the smoothie is made with 1 cup water or

seltzer water or low calorie soda (creme or fruit flavor), 1/2 cup

blueberries (variably admixed with strawberries, or other fruit, depending

upon seasonality and whim), a small handfull of Chinese wolfberries, 1

tbsp. crunchy natural peanut butter, a few walnuts, macadamias, almonds,

filberts, pecans, cashews, etc. (whatever nuts I've got currently on hand),

2 tbsp. flax seed, freshly ground in the Krups coffee grinder, small

handfull of whole, roasted coffee beans, 1 tsp. cellulose fiber, 1 tsp.

guar, 1/2 tsp. xanthan gum, dash cinnamon, dash nutmeg, 1/2 tsp. vanilla

extract, and sweeteners to taste. I usually use a combination of sweeteners

for a synergistic sweetening effect (sucralose and stevia extract, lately.)

I add all the above ingredients to a blender jar, with the exception of the

thickeners (guar and xanthan gum- these go in last). Add a few handfulls of

ice, start blending, and add in the thickeners.

I've always kind of guestimated most of the above measurments, but it

usually comes out quite well. I'm afraid I've never been one to follow

recipes exactly, either. Cooking and food preparation are always a little

bit experimental, for me.

Whoops! I forgot the whey protein powder. I've used various kinds over the

years. Most often I use 1 and 1/2 scoops (provided in the container) of Next

Nutrition Designer Whey French Vanilla.
