Guest guest
Perhaps I skimmed the long postings too quickly, but in the disadvantages of following an Atkins diet, I saw mention of free- range, organic animals, but I did not hear mention of the fact that animals require signifigantly more resources per gram of protein than do nearly all vegetable sources. I think its a valid point to raise, considering that this world would not sustain 6 billion eating a meat-based diet. Besides what might or might not add some years to our own lives, or quality more importantly, we should not lose sight of the fact that, in our lifetimes, water and land will have the potential of becoming extremely valueable. As this is already the case in a few countries, we would be compassionate individuals (not just health-conscious) to give up animal-based diets entirely. Guest guest
Being of a purely ethical nature, this is obivously a difficult issue to address. Are we working under a Utilitarian or a Deontological framework? To what level do we acknowledge that animals are concious? I'd love to discuss it with you, but it's probably outside the scope of this board. In any case, this is more of an argument in favor of donating to charity rather than abandoning animal products at the cost of worsening health. - > Perhaps I skimmed the long postings too quickly, but in the > disadvantages of following an Atkins diet, I saw mention of free- > range, organic animals, but I did not hear mention of the fact that > animals require signifigantly more resources per gram of protein than > do nearly all vegetable sources. > > I think its a valid point to raise, considering that this world would > not sustain 6 billion eating a meat-based diet.
