mandi: Welcome. As a new member you should have received a couple of

e-mails, one of which referred you to the files. Start with the file: " CR

Made Easy " .

To access the files: just go to our home page:

/

At the left, click on " files " . Then click on the file you want to read.

Read the one referenced above first.

Thats all there is to it. The files are jam packed with useful information.

Another requirment is to read Dr. Walford's latest book: " Beyond the 120

Year Diet " available in most public libraries. That will answer many of

your questions.

You really do need to read " Beyond the 120 Year Diet " as Francesca

suggested. I'd also suggest " The Okinawa Program " . Your library

should be able to get both of them, but if you're really interested,

I think you'll end up buying at least BT120YD.

The basic answer is you can eat just about anything you want as long

as you are meeting all of your nutritional requirements, and reducing

your calorie intake. Various adherents have their own take on coffee

or white carbs (white flour, white potatoes, white sugar) - you need

to make your own determination, but as a rule, you at least need to

drastically reduce sugars and any other food which contributes

calories out of proportion to the other nutrients it supplies - which

usually includes white flour and simple starches as well.

Only half facetiously - Do all of the stuff your mother told you to

do, and you ignored. Eat your brightly colored vegetables - lots of

them, reduce/eliminate sweets and refined white starches (some people

include white potatoes in this category). Eat lean protein. Don't

stuff yourself. Skip the pizza - too much fat. Don't supersize

anything. Cut out the high fat/sugar coffeehouse drinks - at least

go to artificial sweetener and skim milk.

Seriously, I'm sure there is at least one person on this list that

will disagree with every statement I've made, but the basics are

there. Some list members swear by the Zone diet, others by Atkins or

paleolithic diets, some are vegetarians or vegans, but you're going

to have to do some basic reading and decide for yourself.

Mandi: this is not a " quick fix " . Hold your horses. Just read the book-

and read the rest of the files. It takes time. Read the book and most of

your questions will be answered.

If I may give you my personal tidbit of advice:

Whatever you do, don't do it too radically. We don't know the exact

mechanisms behind CR just yet nor what other factors affect it

(Insulin response, body mass, free radical damage, etc). We don't know

if s oy is good or bad or whether moderate amounts of saturated fat are

bad or not. We don't know whether grains are good or whether they

ought to be eliminated completely. The best way to go about things,

IMHO, is to cut all refined sugars and grains along wi th MOST

vegetable oils and all transfatty acids. Eating lots of vegetables is

a big part of the equation as well. About the rest, keep moderation in

mind and evaluate the information you see with a critical eye.

Personally, I'd ditch the potatoes (except occasionally with the

skin if organic) and the coffee. Try sweetpotatoes...they taste great. :)

You can learn a lot from other lists and various Paleo boards,

Nourishing Tradition boards, etc.

Cheers,

-
