Guest guest
Fascinating. I wonder if we should all be eating more grapes? Wine up til now was advocated only in moderation - esp since more that 1 or 2 glasses a day was implicated in breast cancer. Could be this substance is also found in red or dark berries such as blueberries which have been shown to help with memory in oldersters? BTW I assume this means RED grapes only since only red wine contains the resveratrol. Many thanks Katrina for giving something concrete like this that can be immediately added to our diets. on 8/24/2003 10:51 PM, Katrina at katnap@... wrote: > Researchers said on Sunday that one of the molecules, a compound known as > resveratrol, was shown in a study to extend the life span of yeast cells by > up to 80 percent. Resveratrol exists naturally in grapes and red wine.
Guest guest
While this has been leapt upon by the popular press for it's obvious headline value, I seem to recall other strategies that extended life in yeast that did not translate to benefits in higher species. Resveratol is a strong anti-oxidant and probably healthful. The result is promising and will lead to more meaningful studies. If I was already drinking wine I might switch to a high resveratol red, but don't think I'll start drinking wine just because of this. FWIW some still question the validity of rat research. I wonder what they would think of yeast/fly research?
