The flush people get after taking niacin (B vitamin) is where body flushes, i.e. turns red, mostly in the head, face, ears and neck (sometimes other places too), and it may even itch. It lasts maybe 1/2-1 hour. Sometimes the reaction may be more intense than other times, and sometimes there is no reaction at all to taking niacin. The reaction is because niacin is very oxygenating and it dialates (opens up) the entire cardiovascular system (veins, arteries, capillaries, etc.). The redness is caused more blood being brought to the surface of the skin. Niacin also helps flush out toxins through the skin which may cause itching and because it is oxygenating it spurs the body to increase its product of hydrogen peroxide and other healing substances, i.e. histamines. It is uncomfortable but nothing to worry about. Bee

Symptoms of a flush is a rash-like appearance on your face, neck, chest and arms (at least for me). Your face will feel hot, perhaps even itchy for a few minutes. From what I have learned, that is your blood getting oxygenated and it feels awesome! with Metta, ~Lori~
Guest guest
Hi Kay, No, it is not safe to take while pregnant. Niacin causes toxins and impurities in the body's fatty tissues to break up and unleash into the bloodstream and the rest of the body. If one were doing L. Ron Hubbard's Purification program, one would be sweating these impurities out in a sauna. Even then, it is not recommended that a woman do the program while pregnant or breastfeeding. For the sake of your child, hold off on the niacin until after nursing. See the book " Clear Body Clear Mind " which was referenced on a posting recently. http://www.clearbodyclearmind.com/index.php Zack On Thu, 19 Jul 2007, Kay Ehlers wrote: > I added niacin to my supplements last night for the first time and I > immediately broke out in what I thought were hives. Guest guest
Dear Zack, The amount of niacin I recommend is 50 mg 2 times a day which I do not believe is enough to cause any problems during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If a person is doing the purification program they would be taking much high doses. Pregnant and breastfeeding moms still need to obtain vitamin B complex which includes niacin, but the problem is that most vitamin B complex contains niacinamide which is synthetic. I agree that pregnant and breastfeeding moms shouldn't take high doses of niacin but they still to take a minimum amount. Pregnant moms are also perscribed folic acid, which is one of the B vitamins. We know that all B vitamins need to be taken together otherwise taking some without others depletes other B vitamins, including niacin. Besides your own body creates niacin in a healthy large colon. Your own body makes niacin in a healthy large colon, but most candida sufferers aren't as able to produce it. When taking B vitamins they " all " need to be included, otherwise taking some and not others depletes the ones not taken. The amount I recommend is a very small amount compared to what Zack is talking about when a person does the Purification Program. This is what I wrote to Zack: Dear Zack, The amount of niacin I recommend is 50 mg 2 times a day which I do not believe is enough to cause any problems during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Only take a maximum of 50 mgs twice a day, and no more while you are pregnant or nursing. It is very important that you get all of the B vitamins, including niacin. Guest guest
Bee, I was only able to find niacin in 100mg capsules. Is it all right to take that once a day while I'm breastfeeding/TTC? And have you heard anything about niacin raising prolactin levels or interfering with conception/pregnancy at all? No I haven't heard about niacin raising prolactin levels but since your own body makes niacin I don't believe the small amount I recommend would raise prolactin enough to interfere with conception. ==>As Dr. Weston A. Price writes in his book " Nutrition and Physical Degeneration " it is most important to cure your candida before you conceive, otherwise your babe will acquire it upon conception. Dr. Price writes that babies inherit both parents " nutritional status " upon conception and it is very critical that it be as good as possible. If not, the child will have to deal with the consequences most of his/her life, particularly with head, facial and dental problems, and will acquire candida from you and/or your spouse. ==>Dr. Price proved that increasing both parents nutritional status prior to conception produced healthy normal babies, even when previous offspring were born unhealthy. In fact the primitive groups he studied " knew this " instinctively so they ensured special nutrients were given to both the man and woman before they conceived. If you want to learn more you can read most of Dr. Price's book online at: http://journeytoforever.org/farm_library/price/pricetoc.html The best, Bee
Guest guest
Thank you, Bee, for the info about getting healthy before conceiving. Unfortunately DH and I needed to undergo IVF in order to get pregnant. We have one frozen embryo left. So the embryo was already conceived almost three years ago. I am hoping to become healthier in the next two months prior to implantation (if it works) and my diet is SO much better now. Hopefully my diet during gestation will help, and then I will raise the second child on this diet as well. My son (who was conceived at the same time) is gorgeous with no major health problems, but I will be starting him on this program next month. Kay > ==>As Dr. Weston A. I commend you for deciding to put your son on this program too. The more the merrier! It is so important for children to understand the importance of nutrients for their well-being throughout their lives. Niacin flushes typically occur 20 minutes to an hour after taking it, but if you take it with food it could take longer. I've also had niacin flushes occur hours later, so timing is of no concern. ==>You can continue taking 1,000 mg niacin per day for as long as you need to, but I suggest you start lowering the doses to 500 mg after 6 months, and 6 months after that lower them to 250 mg. There is no need to continue for very long periods of time on higher doses, particularly since your body will produce niacin as you progress on this program. The minimum amount is 50 mg niacin twice a day along with a B complex. Bee

Thanks so much for your help!! Enjoy! Laurie Hi, I am confused.I thought we were supposed to take a B-complex supplement that has 50 mg niacin in it. Are we to take 1,000 mg niacin in addition to the b-complex? I am back home now (US) and want to buy my supplements today. Any ideas? Miriam " Interesting; I've sometimes noted that cooling effect too, probably because of the niacin dilated blood vessels close to the skin exposing more blood to the cooler surroundings - Seems to me you could layer up your clothes and/or reduce the dosage 'til the flushing gets a little less. I don't know that the flush sensation, " ..starts at the forehead with a warming tingle and intensifies. From there, the tingle travels down the rest of the body, stopping anywhere between the chest to the toes " does this with everyone, I experience it in different ways, often by my whole body just warming up until I start needing a good satisfying scratch, other times my face just feels hot - interestingly, the first time I ever took niacin about 20 years ago, the first, (unexpected and alarming) sensation was a fierce burning sensation across the top of my back exactly where I'd had severe sunburn when I was a child.... Niacin helps your body detoxify, opens up blood vessels and capillaries, and it oxygenates the body. Candida toxins make all of the body's cells go rigid/stiff so that red blood cells cannot fold as they should to get into capillaries. Niacin doesn't make your body lose heat; it creates heat because it is flushing out toxins along with radiation from the sun (sunburns) and other sources. When you feel chilled afterward take a hot shower or Epsom salt bath, or bundle up in warm blankets. Also ensure the air in your home has plenty of moisture. Guest guest
Thanks Bee for explaining the health benefits of niacin, and for the informative web-page reference. I must explain that I have CFS/ME, so I have problems with a low core body temperature to start with. The niacin really does cause me to lose heat. Anything that dilates the peripheral blood vessels can cause heat loss, which is why the St Bernard dogs shouldn't carry brandy to those people rescued from avalanches! However, I take on board what you say about the importance of taking the niacin and I'll just have to be ready to wrap up well afterwards. CFS/ME are both caused by candida. See " Candida Causes Cell Membrane Defects " to understand the problems that candida toxins cause; http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/cabout1.php ==>Low core temperature involves many functions and organs in the body, but with candida it is mainly caused by malfunctioning adrenals and thyroid. That is because candida toxins makes all body cells go rigid, which interferes with the functioning of all organs, and the hormones that are produced aren't as able to get into rigid/stiff cells where they are needed to do their job. You only need to do this program to correct those problems, as well as your CFS. Bee
Guest guest
I have had my 6th niacin flush today. Two days ago I had a similar flush with 5/5 intensity level. I have been keeping track of each flush and rating them (crazy, I know). Question - the flushes are lasting around 25 mins and boy are they intense. Rapid heart beat, hard to breath normally, chills (except my head feels hot like it is going to explode) and internal trembling. Is this normal? Seems like all my reactions to anything (coffee enemas etc.) are the same - a feeling like a jumbo panic attack. Thanks -
