Guest guest
Hi Warren: I think this may be incorrect. Walford says that consuming lots of guar between meals (and without food) is the danger that can cause problems. If you eat guar with meals or food, not only is there no problem but it is with food that it is effective as an appetite suppressant. Guest guest
Sometimes my health food store is out of guar, which they do not regard with any importance, so I have picked up Xanthum (sp?). Is that similar enough? Peg
Guest guest
That is good news (about guar) that I didn't know about. A fine message about both the safety and the benefits too. How do you ever recall past messages so well -- find them -- and then respond so effectively? You are *good*! -- Warren =============================== On 23 Nov 2003, Francesca wrote: Hi Warren: I think this may be incorrect. I've been consuming most of my guar puddings between meals. For the heck of it, I checked BT120YD to re-read all the wonderful things that guar does for the body - and came upon THIS: pgs 237 & 238: A word of caution: consuming very large amounts of fiber between meals in the form of processed material like guar gum can cause sigmoid volvulus (huh??? you ask, what the heck is that....) a twisting and impaction of the colon. Also, the benefits accrue to consuming guar WITH MEALS such as: pg 84: guar gum added to a meal significantly prolongs the time after eating before hunger returns...... + a significant weight loss over 10 weeks...... accompanied by a decrease in LDL fats and an improved glucose-tolerance curve. pg 114: Supplementing ....with gel-forming fibers such as guar gum must be either a part of or intimately mixed with the food (to favorably affect glucose metabolism and insulin requirements). Guar gum taken 2 minutes before a meal has no effect; it must be incorporated into the meal. As serendipity would have it, I had already cut back on my between-meal guar by adding less guar to my puddings for a thinner mixture because less guar in my pudding meant less gas. However now, I will only eat it WITH meals, not only to get all the beneficial effects. but to AVOID the dangerous possibility of what sounds like something you don't want to wind up in the hospital with. Guest guest
thanks Warren. You give me too much credit. I remember this post as something we have in our files alongside the recipe for the puddings. It's the standard warning that we give when describing the puddings and the guar. Otherwise I have to search the archives like everyone else. on 11/23/2003 4:31 PM, Warren at warren.taylor@... wrote: > How do you ever recall past messages so well -- find them -- > and then respond so effectively?
