Guest guest
Something in Mercola's article got my attention yesterday... when he talked about ONE symptom of biotin deficiency being a red, scaly rash around the eyes. It seems like too much of a coincedence to me that several weeks ago, a small red scaly spot showed up under my left eye as well, and only has diminished because I put a dab of cod liver oil on it each morning. I can still see the spot, and am quite sure that if I quit putting CLO on it, it would become rough and scaly again. This also is talked about in the following article... that the first set of symptoms shows themselves rather quickly (3-5 weeks) after consuming large quantities of raw eggwhites. My red spot appeared about 3-4 weeks after I started drinking the egg drink every day. I have drank 3 raw eggs each morning since December 1st, and also use raw eggs for things such as mayonaise and desserts (some desserts with frozen whipped eggwhites, stevia, vanilla bean and lemon juice only). Here is some great and thorough information about biotin deficiency: http://www.emedicine.com/PED/topic238.htm I have seen many of the symptoms being described on this board from various people: dry skin, hair loss, brittle nails, mood changes, depression, Seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infections, etc.... Many of these symptoms could be mistaken for " healing reactions " instead of simple biotin deficiency. I'm not being an alarmist... I just think this issue might need to be explored further. Dr. Mercola no longer consumes raw eggs (I'm sure on sparse occasions, it would be great to do, but not every day, according to him). Also, my mood changes have been quite frightening, in regards to outbursts and even throwing things. I am not afraid of healing reactions, and I even WELCOME them! But, I AM afraid of some sort of easily-corrected deficiency that could make things much more difficult for me! There is also the possiblility that some people are more susceptible to biotin deficiency than others. (i.e. Bee drinking the egg drink every morning for years and years, and feeling great!) As for me, I will probably begin the experiment of NOT eating raw eggs for awhile, and see how my symptoms go. I will either poach my eggs in the morning, or simply boil them for 2 minutes to barely cook the whites and leave the yolks raw, and eat them out of the shell with a spoon, sprinkled with celtic salt, like my wife does sometimes. Again, doing so is fully acceptable according to Bee's program! I'm not doubting the program... I'm just suggesting that maybe an evolution of it is required for me. It's too bad, because the egg drink is super fast to fix each morning! There are some very eye-opening things in this medical article. Especially the chart showing the progression and these excerpts: " Causes Causes of biotin deficiency include the following: Eating raw egg whites: Some mistakenly believe that raw egg-white consumption is the only cause of biotin deficiency. Nonetheless, a diet that contains raw egg whites quickly and almost invariably leads to biotin deficiency... " And: " The most important aspects of the medical care in patients with biotin deficiency include the early recognition of the condition and the prompt institution of therapy with adequate amounts of biotin. The dosage of biotin that should be administered is debated. Some authorities suggest a daily intramuscular injection of 150 µg of biotin. At this dose, symptoms of biotin deficiency begin to resolve within 3-5 days and are essentially absent within 3-5 months. The following issues must be addressed: If the cause of biotin deficiency is the ingestion of raw eggs, the patient must immediately stop the practice. " It is a very easy condition to treat, and I'm sure that the 4 vitamin b-50 capsules we take each day is more than adequate to fix the problem rather quickly... as well as all the healthy foods we eat! Just to be safe, I might buy some EXTRA biotin to supplement for a month or so. Here's to our health! Doug
Guest guest
Doug, you ARE getting biotin in the B complex, and also Mercola changed his mind about getting any biotin deficiency from raw egg whites. The syndromes you describe are all die- off/detoxifying/healing symptoms. I've been having at least 3 whole eggs per day for years and I do not get any skin symptoms. Doug, I have done my research, so sorry, but you should send this to me instead of alarming the group. Guest guest
Sorry Bee! That red, scaly spot under my eye just seemed too much of a coincedence. I didn't realize that he revised his recommendations. Here was the link where he changed his mind, just like you say. http://www.mercola.com/2002/nov/13/eggs.htm Maybe I can get a biotin test done, just to ease my mind. Might be a good way to make me feel better about it (since Mercola went back and forth trying to decide which is best), and could help others in the group feel more secure about it too. I would definitely miss the egg drink, so I think Ill keep doing it for now!! Sorry for being an alarmist. Your research is impeccable. Guest guest
Oh... and one more thing I noticed. The " friend " of Mercola's who sent him the alarming info about biotin deficiency worked at Bayer. Bayer's pharmaceutical division is pumping all kinds of stuff into us that's a lot worse than raw eggs, I'm sure!!!! Maybe Mercola's friend should stick to exposing THAT. Your research is impeccable. ==>Hi Doug. It is an honest mistake my friend. You can take extra biotin if you are concerned. Buy it separately as long as you also take B complex, but don't take too much or it will throw off the balance of the other B vitamins. But you also get biotin in other foods, particularly liver. Another way around it is to use only 2 whole eggs, and egg yolks only for any other eggs you add to the drink. Or you can poach the eggs first. Or let the boiling water sit longer so it cooks the whites. I also compare us eating raw eggs to animals in the wild who don't stop to remove egg whites or cook them. LOL! When my father was young they'd go hunting and many times ate raw eggs they found in the forest. Many people, like Dr. Mercola, even down raw eggs without mixing them with anything. Yuk. I couldn't do that. In the end I believe Mother Nature doesn't get things wrong, but people sure screw up things, and sometimes by too much examination, making things more difficult and complicated. Isn't the saying K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid). LOL! Bee

Any specific substance in a food, herb or spice can be isolated and when tested in a laboratory could indicate it could cause problems. But the " whole food " with all of its nutrients and co-factors doesn't act like that in the body! Duh? Bee
Guest guest
Doug, I had a small red circle pop up under my right eye, it acually felt like a burn. It was soar!! It has gotten better but is still there, it has been almost a week. Do you think it's related to the biotin deficiency? Thank's Doug <organyze@...> wrote: Something in Mercola's article got my attention yesterday... when he talked about ONE symptom of biotin deficiency being a red, scaly rash around the eyes. Guest guest
No. I don't want to alarm you. I'm not the expert here... Bee is. How long have you been on the diet? Are you taking all of the supplements?? You can do a search here for posts about this. When the red spot appeared more than a month ago, someone posted that those spots appeared several times, but then go away. It's most likely part of the die-off and healing reactions. You can put cod liver oil on it, and it will get MUCH better, I assure you. It took cod liver oil 3 days to make mine virtually disappear. Now, I'm experimenting with NOT putting CLO on it, just to see what happens. If it makes you feel any better, go have a biotin test. Mine wasn't sore, and I don't think a spot like you are describing is indicative of biotin deficiency. Is it scaly?? Mine was, and it was a little smaller than a dime. " If you are you couldn't possible get a biotin deficiency even IF eggs white may cause it (which I do not believe they do). Skin eruptions are caused by toxins being eliminated through the skin. Also your own stomach and intestines produces biotin, along with many foods that contain biotin. Bee
