I consider Dr. Weil to be somewhat conservative. When I searched his site,

I found no commentary about caloric restriction at all until Dec 2003.

Still, I like his interest in nutrition & herbal medicine.

I'm not familiar with his work.

Hi Bruce:

Not specifically recommending Dr. Weil. I provided that as the

first 'somewhat authoritative' source I had been able to find. I

understand what you mean by 'very mainstream'!

It is difficult to find sources that are neither excessively

mainstream at one end of the spectrum, nor off the wall at the

other. Most, unfortunately, seem to be in one or other of those two

categories.

What I would find persuasive is something that says essentially: " we

studied two groups that were identical except that we fed one group X

calories of olive oil daily and the other X calories of coconut oil.

We found one group to be noticeably healthier than the

other ......... etc " .

I realize that is rather demanding. But so much 'theoretical' stuff

is eventually found to be not borne out in empirical testing that I

am reluctant to accept 'theoretical' claims, in the absence of

supporting evidence from testing with control groups. Fish oil and

beta carotene are two recent examples of nutrients whose benefits

were heavily touted before tests were done but subsequently showed no

benefits when tested empirically. Also, a recent large study showed

no evidence of benefit from fibre in protecting against colon cancer,

again in conflict with what had been predicted. Similarly, wine,

much criticized on theoretical grounds, shows huge benefits in

empirical testing.

Of course this does not mean all theoretical claims will be proven

wrong. Just that one needs to be cautious about accepting them, in

my opinion. I have not yet located any 'empirical-type' stuff on

coconut oil. But will be looking further.
