Guest guest
I've read a lot of this in the past - I belonged to several veggie groups for a while, and I certainly agree with most of it. But the bottom line is if you own land you must pay taxes and that land must earn enough to pay those taxes or it goes to someone who will. If I grow say corn on an acre I'll net maybe 50 bushels at 3$ per bushel - 150$. If I grow one cattle I sell it for .25 times 1200# = 300$. And the pasture doesn't requires near as much heavy equipment. That's the economics of it. Cattle is grown on pasture which disrupts less than growing a crop, allowing other animals to use the land as well. So it's not the "bad" cattle that is the problem. The "bad" cattle also eat a lot of waste in this country, eg, 300 million tons of orange peel (as I recall). Other wastes such as turkey litter (one reason I don't want to eat beef anymore). But suggesting the solution is a crop like soy, I would counter that bahia grass is the "true" answer. You can bail hay 3 times per year without destroying the land near as much and without the heavy investment in equipment and fuel. Not as much fertilizer and no pesticides. They do this in India already, I am told by an Indian friend. Now all you have to do is implement the process. I would buy the protein if it were commercially available to bring down the price. Wheatgrass is too expensive. Regards.
