Guest guest
Following comes courtesy of friend Tim Tyler http://timtyler.org/ Francesca originally brought up the topic of water. Others have commented too. -- Warren --------------------------------------------------------- ''Drink water to lose weight German scientists have found the secret to shedding the pounds could be as simple as drinking more water. A study by Berlin's Charite University found that people who drank the recommended two litres of water per day burnt off an average extra 150 calories per day. The team led by professor Boschmann said water stimulated the sympathetic nerve system that regulates metabolism. The increased rate of metabolism was responsible for burning off the excess calories, according to a Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism report quoted in German magazine Men's Health. The team found however that carbonated water as well as all other drinks had a negative effect and only still water worked if people wanted to get the " slimming effect " from drinking.'' - http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_845219.html?menu=news.scienceanddiscove ry The study's abstract says: ''Drinking 500 ml of water increased metabolic rate by 30%. The increase occurred within 10 min and reached a maximum after 30-40 min. The total thermogenic response was about 100 kJ. About 40% of the thermogenic effect originated from warming the water from 22 to 37 C.'' - http://jcem.endojournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/88/12/6015 ....so if your *goal* is to lose weight, this suggests adding some ice cubes to your still drinks might help burn those calories off. A previous study found that the water content of food decreased the volume of subsequent energy intake - but that drinking water had no significant effect: ''Water incorporated into a food but not served with a food decreases energy intake in lean women'' - http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/70/4/448 -- Warren
Guest guest
In other words, add more water to your oatmeal when cooking it; eat more soups, and find ways to add water to foods to eat less. Or eat guar pudding with your meals. An added bonus is that drinking lots of water is a benefit to health in other ways (prevents constipation, aids digestion, for example). on 12/22/2003 6:44 AM, Warren at warren.taylor@... wrote: > ''Water incorporated into a food but not served with a food decreases > energy intake in lean women'' > > - http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/70/4/448 > > -- Warren
