Guest guest
I just posted that I don't have trouble with Synthroid, and remembered as soon as I hit the send button that my sister and two first cousins (female) also do fine. My father, his brothers and a male first cousin also do Synthroid and do fine. Dusty Re: Re: Normal thyroid labs but low body temp? , >From where did you get your percentages? Guest guest
Er, I carefully calculated it using the method well known in scientific circles [sWAG]. [scientific Wild A$$ Guess] {gggg} Actually, it is a guess; and is based upon the fact that there are not many more thousands on this list than we see. And that Synthroid and its siblings are the only thing known [or prescribed up front] for hyperthyroidism by lots of doctors. And many other things I've noticed; but not from this list. Hyperthyroidism is discussed in Wikipedia, along with the various treatment protocols. However, here is what they say about Synthroid [T4] treatment: " *T4 Only:* This treatment protocol involves supplementation of T4 (Thyroxine) alone, in a synthetic form. It is currently the standard treatment in mainstream medicine. " So the fact that it is the standard treatment in mainstream medicine means that you have a very good chance of getting that treatment when diagnosed with hypothyroidism. And if even one percent of those with hypothyroidism and who take Synthroid should show up here I suspect our list would grow immensely. There may well be studies with precise numbers as to what exact percentage of people have not difficulties with T4 treatment, but I have not researched it. Chuck might know off hand of some; or if my guesstimate is wildly off base. > > Re: Normal thyroid labs but low body temp? > <hypothyroidism/message/38093;_ylc=X3oDMTJxaXU5aDd\ nBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE1BGdycElkAzE0NTY2NARncnBzcElkAzE3MDkyNTEwODIEbXNnSWQDMzgwOTMEc2V\ jA2Rtc2cEc2xrA3Ztc2cEc3RpbWUDMTIwOTQ2NDc0Mg--> > > > > Posted by: " Roni Molin " matchermaam@... > <mailto:matchermaam@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20Normal%20thyroid%20labs%20but%2\ 0low%20body%20temp%3F> > matchermaam <matchermaam> > > > Mon Apr 28, 2008 6:09 pm (PDT) > > , > From where did you get your percentages? Guest guest
Actually, there are many things about me that point toward hypErthyroidism rather than hypOthyroidism. Remember, when I gave the diagnosis of hypothyroidism to my wife she exclaimed: " You CAN'T be hypothyroid! Everything about you screams hyperthyroid! But at 67 the weight is catching up with me, as I'm about 190 lbs now [at 5' 11 " ]. If I live long enough I may have to figure out what calories and fat grams are! Guest guest
I don't think you know what to look for. I have never met a well person on T4 meds. Either they have weight issues or MOOD issues or both. Some of them are flat emotionally, my friend's daughter is so prickly that I cannot have much of a conversation with her. She just had her third cesarean b/c she can't labor efficiently. Gracia Roni, You wrote: > ... Every woman I know that's hypothyroid has had trouble with synthroid alone.... Guest guest
I take 20 mcg Lipitor to control cholesterol, and it is now something like 165 total. However, in my most recent test the LDL was a little higher than the doctor liked so he is upping the Lipitor to 40 mcg[?] to see what that does. I've had heart arrhythmia all my life, and take a calcium blocker that controls that. I've had allergies most if not all my life; however during the past 6 or 8 years most of the symptoms have greatly abated or disappeared. I haven't had an asthma attack in over 8 years. I do use a prophylactic inhaler for that and a pill for hay fever. My eyes do still itch terribly at times; and that is the only uncontrolled allergy symptom that I normally have. I've always been very nervous, high-strung and have difficulty sleeping. I discovered I was hypothyroid a couple of years or so ago; apparently VERY soon after it happened. I take 75 mcg of Synthroid daily. Over the past several years my weight has slowly and steadily climbed. I've gone from always being skinny to having at least 30 pound excess in the worst place according to the experts. But I still eat like a pig... [Male, age 67, 190 lbs]. On Jan. 7, 2000 a diverticulum in my colon ruptured, resulting in peritonitis and emergency surgery to remove a portion of my colon and do a temporary colostomy. The colostomy was removed on April 12, 2000, or thereabouts. Since that time I've had a problem of excess acid in my lower digestive tract, which has caused a number of problems. A few months back I started taking a heaping teaspoonful of fiber with a glass of milk every day and those problems have virtually disappeared. I think that I have discussed all of these here before. Some of them could possibly have links to hypothyroidism, or about a million other ailments. > > Re: Normal thyroid labs but low body temp? > <hypothyroidism/message/38138;_ylc=X3oDMTJxcGV2b2x\ tBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE1BGdycElkAzE0NTY2NARncnBzcElkAzE3MDkyNTEwODIEbXNnSWQDMzgxMzgEc2V\ jA2Rtc2cEc2xrA3Ztc2cEc3RpbWUDMTIwOTYwODUwNg--> > > > > Posted by: " Crystal " sweetnwright@... > <mailto:sweetnwright@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20Normal%20thyroid%20labs%20but%20\ low%20body%20temp%3F> > sweetenloe1 <sweetenloe1> > > > Wed Apr 30, 2008 2:27 pm (PDT) > > Okay so you have a fast metabolism, but what other health issues do > you deal > with? > cw > > " Aslan, " said Lucy, " you're bigger. Guest guest
I think it might depend on how long one goes on with hypoT before getting diagnosed and on the right amount of meds. I went for over a year before a doctor would diagnose me. That only happened because I diagnosed myself and brought the literature into the doctors office then he did the necessary blood work. I have 4 other sisters that have hypoT and were diagnosed very early, because of me, I might add. I noticed their symptoms and told them to get into the doctor. They had the blood work done and got on meds quickly, not having to wait a year. None of them have a weight issue. I have a weight issue I believe because of not getting diagnosed soon enough. Then on top of that, I had a hashi flare-up that the doctor I was seeing at the time apparently knew nothing even though she was an endo (which doesn't mean much) Before all this started, I weighed 118#. I now weight 150. Just my view on the subject. Venizia -- In hypothyroidism , Chuck B <gumboyaya@...> wrote: > > Gracia wrote: > > > > I don't think you know what to look for. Guest guest
I believe Chuck is the one who mentioned an apparent or possible connection between lack of early treatment for hypothyroidism and later problems in controlling the symptoms and being able to live a normal life by just taking something simple like Synthroid. I don't know if there's ever been any studies on this or not, but it certainly makes sense. If you go untreated you may suffer permanent damage that is not corrected by simple treatment, or so my thinking goes. And if you're untreated long enough with a severe case you will die. I've gained weight but have not done anything to try to lose it. My wife has to watch what she eats all the time. If I have a bag of chocolate covered peanuts I sit down with the bag and munch away. She takes one or two peanuts and quits. I guess I sometimes consume two or three days of calories and fat grams in a day; not smart, I know... > > Re: Normal thyroid labs but low body temp? > <hypothyroidism/message/38175;_ylc=X3oDMTJxOGxpNTh\ tBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE1BGdycElkAzE0NTY2NARncnBzcElkAzE3MDkyNTEwODIEbXNnSWQDMzgxNzUEc2V\ jA2Rtc2cEc2xrA3Ztc2cEc3RpbWUDMTIwOTY5NTA0MA--> > > > > Posted by: " venizia1948 " nelsonck@... > <mailto:nelsonck@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20Normal%20thyroid%20labs%20but%\ 20low%20body%20temp%3F> > venizia1948 <venizia1948> > > > Thu May 1, 2008 3:06 pm (PDT) > > I think it might depend on how long one goes on with hypoT before > getting diagnosed and on the right amount of meds. > > I went for over a year before a doctor would diagnose me. Guest guest
I used to have heartburn many years ago, but now I never have it. The acid was always in my lower digestive tract. I just had an endoscopic dilation of the Schatzki ring, and my doctor has me on a prescription antacid because he said the procedure would tend to revert faster if stomach acid were to be present at that location. And he said that my stomach does extend past the diaphragm, which would tend to give me acid reflux. But I never experience any. > . > > > Re: Normal thyroid labs but low body temp? > <hypothyroidism/message/38177;_ylc=X3oDMTJxMnNrZmF\ kBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE1BGdycElkAzE0NTY2NARncnBzcElkAzE3MDkyNTEwODIEbXNnSWQDMzgxNzcEc2V\ jA2Rtc2cEc2xrA3Ztc2cEc3RpbWUDMTIwOTY5NTA0MA--> > > > > Posted by: " Roni Molin " matchermaam@... > <mailto:matchermaam@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20Normal%20thyroid%20labs%20but%2\ 0low%20body%20temp%3F> > matchermaam <matchermaam> > > > Thu May 1, 2008 3:07 pm (PDT) > > , as far as the acid, I take multi enzymes (veggie type) and > acidopholus before each > meal, and it is working wonderfully. Guest guest
Of course you have no acid relux. All those yummy chocolate covered peanuts are protecting you. When I used to eat things like that, I never had a problem with my stomach either. Roni <res075oh@...> wrote: I used to have heartburn many years ago, but now I never have it. > > > > > Posted by: " Roni Molin " matchermaam@... > > matchermaam > > > Thu May 1, 2008 3:07 pm (PDT) > > , as far as the acid, I take multi enzymes (veggie type) and > acidopholus before each > meal, and it is working wonderfully.
