Guest guest
They are individually wrapped and perfect to stick in a pocket or purse for an " on the run " snack or even a light meal. Here are the ingredients on the Rebars I ordered: Apples, Carrots, Spinach, alfalfa, Cabbage, Broccoli, Kale, Wheatgrass, Celery, Rosehip, Parsley, Cauliflower. Cucumber, Beets, Bell Pepper, Collards, Watercress, BokChoy, Tomatoes, Garlic, and Natural Fruit flavors. May contain one or more of the following fruit flavors: Raspberry, Strawberry, Blueberry, Blackberry, Grape. Also: organically grown in accordance with the Washington State Dept of Agriculture and the California Organic Foods Act of 1990. Each bar has 160 cal and has (as Zack says) a pleasant sweet taste. on 12/12/2003 2:05 PM, Zack Brown at zbrown@... wrote: > I recommend rebars for anyone who likes good-tasting, healthy snacks. > They are nutrient-rich, low in calories, and tasty. Guest guest
After I posted this I checked the ingredients on the new bars. They have things like dextrose and molasses in them. However the original bar (which is the only one I've ever ordered), still has the same wholesome ingredients. on 2/17/2005 12:14 PM, Francesca Skelton at fskelton@... wrote: > In our folder under " IMPROVING YOUR CRON PROGRAM " , we have a file called > " " Travel kits or food on the run " . > > Among the foods mentioned is a product called: REBARS, very CRON friendly, > which can be bought at the following website: www.rebar-usa.com or by > calling their toll free number. Guest guest
Not to promote any specific product, and I have no financial interest in these, but if you are looking for something like the ReBar that is truly made from nothing but nuts, seeds and dried fruit, check these out. They are new, from canada, and just coming into the US. http://www.perfect10bars.com/NutritionalinfoNatural.htm They are sending me some to sample so I can give you my opinion in a week or so. I already evaluated them against my " label " criteria and gave them a " caution " rating as being a little low in fiber/calorie and high in calorie density. That's the best rating I have even given to a energy bar. I will have to check out the Rebar now. Regards Jeff
Guest guest
The ingredients listed do sound good. I wonder how hard it would be to make a batch of something similar at home? One could cook up a bunch before a trip or for whenever you'd be away from home. I'm not sure how much money you'd save but you could make them exactly to your own tastes. Anyone have a recipe? I'm thinking mixed nuts, seeds and blueberries bound together in a whole wheat flour and yogurt dough? Never tried this before so I may be missing a real important ingredient. Maybe baking soda or peanut butter? And of course you could pre-cut the bars to have a specific caloric value. Any suggestions from the bakers out there? Guest guest
Greg: even if you could cook up a batch, the beauty of these products are that they are sealed up in a foil wrapper and need neither refrigeration or any other special handling/storage. So I keep them in the pantry pretty much indefinitely and then throw them in a bag or pocket as necessary for trips. If I don't eat them, they're still fine for the next time. I suppose you could make a batch and freeze them, but then when you defrost, you need to eat them fairly soon or risk spoilage or them being past their prime. on 2/17/2005 2:22 PM, Greg Ham at gdham@... wrote: > The ingredients listed do sound good. Guest guest
This was sent to me off list. The only problem I can see with these is that they're a bit " pricey " . The Rebars are $18 for a box of 12 (and we get a discount as per my earlier post), and Jeff's suggestion, which he will report back to us about, is about $22 for a box of 12, making them under $2.00 each. Jeff also will be attempting to get us a discount. I assume they're all about the same size bar (but I could be wrong). ___________________ Here is another choice in bars I keep Larabars in my car and desk at work for those times when I find myself needing to eat but away from good food. I particularly like the cherry. The only ingredients are dates, almonds, and unsweetend cherries, about 190 calories/bar. They are locally available at Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and Vitamin Cottage. I think they are around $2.20 each. Thier website is http://www.larabar.com/ I have no financial interest in the company. Guest guest
A while back I compared the contents of any bar with just peanuts. I found I could get most the foodstuff in the bar adding a little sugar. Health bars came out as early as 1963, and they tasted like an artgum eraser, but they were "healthy" as in no sugar, mostly protein, vits/mins. Still they weren't much better than a peanut bar. Think about it, which protein do you use - either peanut, nut, soy, dry milk or egg white. I kinda like Jeff's idea grinding sunflower seeds but why not just eat the seeds and raisins? Let's say you want a perfect diet bar, like 10 oz would equal 1800 kcals. What would it be? Too many nuts/peanuts = too much fat. If I was going to backpack into the woods for 5 days, I'd probably carry 5 or 6, 16oz plastic jars of peanuts (2700 kcals). Or sunflower seeds with more fiber, magnesium, folate. Calorie dense - not what we aim for usually, but not that many calories. Regards. ----- Original Message ----- From: Francesca Skelton support group Sent: Friday, February 18, 2005 10:53 AM Subject: [ ] FW: Rebars This was sent to me off list. The only problem I can see with these is that they're a bit "pricey". Guest guest
Based on US dollars, I believe we can get them for 1.75 a bar for the case of 12, mixed flavors. I am expecting more info and samples next week The three bars, Perfect10, Rebar, and Larabar, all seem to be around 50 gram bars. I am personally going to try the three (not all at once) and do a nutritional comparison chart in the next week or so. Jeff
