Guest guest
How much Armour are you on? Maybe it's not enough. Constipation is a hypo symptom not an Armour side effect. The best thing for me is to eat oatmeal for breakfast. I LOVE Kashi apples and cinnamon. Also, Garden of Life makes a product called Super Seed that I can't say enough about. It has flax seed and many many many other natural ingredients including probiotics. cw -- Anyone have constipation associated with thyroid meds? Anyone on Thyroid meds deal with constipation and sluggish bowel function? Things were great when I started my meds, now all of a sudden, not so much. At first I thought it could be due to my new diet. No sugar and eating only meats and some veggies and fruits (not too many of the veggies and fruits). Yesterday when I was at my Naturopath's office to pick up my adrenal tonic, I mentioned this to her and she said it could be due to my Thyroid med. I am currently on Armour. Any suggestions on how to " move things along? " Thanks **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
I had severe constipation before I was treated for hypothyroid and when my dose is too low. Guest guest
Hi AJ, This is from the Akins type diet, in my opinion. It really screws up the colon, which it did for me. Guest guest
AJ, constipation was one of the hypO symptoms I got when it was time for me to increase my Armour. Here's some suggestions in case you're not into dosing Armour by symptoms: Warm water enema. A few prunes the night before. Add some more fat to your diet. Or if in a hurry to " decompress " , drink a cup of castor oil, but stay within close proximity to a restroom - I don't recommend this particular drastic method of " decompression " to the faint of heart. Guest guest
Thanks for that suggestion. I've recently found that taking about 5 or 6 grams of fiber per day totally eliminates my lower bowel high acid condition [although I haven't the slightest idea of how]. Guest guest
As I understand it that makes a good laxative. As I posted elsewhere, I've only been constipated twice in my life. The first time was at age 64, and once since. There were 13 days when my brother died that I ate at resturaunts every meal, and I guess I didn't get enough fiber. Normally I have absolutely no need or use for a laxative. In any event, if I eat a salad on an empty stomach then that has a laxative effect on me. I seem to be very sensitive to a laxative effect in foods or medicine. My major problem seems to be a very high acid content in my lower colon. Maybe because they cut out part of it 6 years or so ago, and what's left doesn't do as good a job of absorbing the digestive acid. I am not taking fiber for its laxative properties; as a matter of fact I haven't seen any such effect. Maybe if I took more than 5 grams per day [???] I would; but since I don't need it I won't. I'm trying the Fiber One to see how that works; as I don't like the taste of the fiber in milk. Guest guest
I think what you need are digestive enzymes (vegetarian). They have no side effects that I have ever seen, and they help you to digest all your food properly. They are not expensive and they are not drugs. Also, you don't have to cram down tons of fiber. Guest guest
I'm fairly certain [one of] my problem is I don't get enough fiber, as just adding 5 grams per day had such beneficial effects. I think we need 25 or 30 grams per day; and my diet is truly atrocious by health standards. My surgery was necessitated by diverticulitis when a diverticuli ruptured, causing peritonitis. My wife, who is very health food conscious has mentioned many times that I don't eat enough fiber. I certainly won't be adding tons... I tried the Fiber One today for the first time, and it has 10 or 12 grams of fiber in one serving; about twice what I was adding with the powder. I had quite a bit of stomach gas today, which I understand is normal with a fiber increase [at first]. I'll give it a bit of time and see how it goes. The cereal sure tastes better than the powder. > > Re: Anyone have constipation associated with thyroid meds? > <hypothyroidism/message/35281;_ylc=X3oDMTJxcjliYnB\ 2BF9TAzk3MzU5NzE1BGdycElkAzE0NTY2NARncnBzcElkAzE3MDkyNTEwODIEbXNnSWQDMzUyODEEc2V\ jA2Rtc2cEc2xrA3Ztc2cEc3RpbWUDMTIwMDY5NzcwMQ--> > > > > Posted by: " Roni Molin " matchermaam@... > <mailto:matchermaam@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20Anyone%20have%20constipation%20\ associated%20with%20thyroid%20meds%3F> > matchermaam <matchermaam> > > > Fri Jan 18, 2008 3:08 pm (PST) > > I think what you need are digestive enzymes (vegetarian) > . Guest guest
One thing to remember is not to confuse insoluble fiber (the type furnished by the corn bran in Fiber One) and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber is the type responsible for lowering cholesterol. Insoluble fiber, in one example, is the thick gel that forms on the side of the cooking pot when you cook oatmeal. A paste from this web site says it best... * Insoluble fiber improves the health of the intestinal tract by increasing stool volume and stimulating normal bowel contractions (peristalsis) thus reducing transit time through the colon. This protects against digestive complaints like constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and diverticulitis. * By accelerating the speed of food through the intestinal tract, insoluble fiber may help prevent digestive disorders such as constipation or diverticulitis (infection caused by food getting stuck in small pouches in the wall of your colon. It may also reduce the absorption of salt (thus reducing the risk of raised blood pressure) and toxins. The corn bran in Fiber One has a lot of carbs (sugars), no doubt that is why they also chose to put aspartame in it to limit calories. You can get insoluble fiber in old fashioned oats, oat bran, etc. Oats are a much better choice than corn, corn is what they use in feed lots to fatten cattle and hogs before slaughter. Nice marbling to the meat. A proper dose of thyroid med should also contribute to your regularity, constipation and slow bowel transit time is --->a MAJOR<--- sign of hypothyroidism. You are probably being dosed by a TSH worshiper with Levoxyl. :-/ Neil ________________________________ From: hypothyroidism [mailto:hypothyroidism ] On Behalf Of Sent: Friday, January 18, 2008 7:53 PM hypothyroidism Subject: Re: Anyone have constipation associated with thyroid meds? Guest guest
Hello I really enjoy reading everybody's experiences and continue to learn from them daily. I would like to share with you my own experience. I suffered terribly from constipation, nothing helped me, whether it was enormous amount of fibre, fruit, splitting foods, etc. Eventually, on my insistence, my doctor raised my thyroid medication, and I have never had constipation problems again - apparently it is one of the symptoms of being hypothyroid. I am on T4/T3 combination and have never felt better in years. Blessings to everyone. Guest guest
I keep saying I DON'T HAVE A CONSTIPATION PROBLEM; have only been constipated twice in 67 years. I also don't have a " slow bowel transit time " ; as a matter of fact if I eat blueberries at noon today by 8:00 PM I will have a blue stool. I am exceedingly regular. Once a counselor suggested I might read the newspaper in the john rather than at the dining table. I replied that I guess I could read the headline. I sit down, do what I came to do, take care of the paperwork and leave. I don't meditate there... I am being treated with Synthroid; and by your standards it must be doing a wonderful job. However, I personally don't think it has any effect. I had no hypo symptoms either before or after taking it. As a matter of fact when I told my wife I was diagnosed as hypothyroid due to an elevated TSH she exclaimed: " You CAN'T be hypothyroid; every thing about you indicates hyperthyroid " . I guess you would agree with her; as my personal symptoms are the opposite of those you list below. Which just points out: We're all different in our sameness...[ggg] > A proper dose of thyroid med should also contribute to your regularity, > constipation and slow bowel transit time is --->a MAJOR<--- sign of > hypothyroidism. Guest guest
, if you don't feel the synthroid is doing anything for you, why don't you stop it for about a month and then get retested and see what it says. Sometimes test results are wrong for one reason or another, sometimes the tech, sometimes the typist, who knows? It just seems that is you didn't have symptoms and don't feel any different, it should be checked again. Isn't that what you would recommend to someone else in the same circumstances? Guest guest
There seems to be an echo in here! [ggg] I DON'T HAVE A CONSTIPATION PROBLEM. I've been constipated twice in my life. But I'm glad you got back to a healthy regimen. > > Re: Anyone have constipation associated with thyroid meds? > <hypothyroidism/message/35334;_ylc=X3oDMTJxMW40Y21\ lBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE1BGdycElkAzE0NTY2NARncnBzcElkAzE3MDkyNTEwODIEbXNnSWQDMzUzMzQEc2V\ jA2Rtc2cEc2xrA3Ztc2cEc3RpbWUDMTIwMDc0MTgxOA--> > > > > Posted by: " Nora Alves " noraalves@... > <mailto:noraalves@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20Anyone%20have%20constipation%20as\ sociated%20with%20thyroid%20meds%3F> > noraalves <noraalves> > > > Sat Jan 19, 2008 12:18 am (PST) > > > Hello > > I really enjoy reading everybody's experiences and > continue to learn from them daily. > > I would like to share with you my own experience.
