Guest guest
It's all well and good that we have individual people on the list who have had success with Atkins, BUT the only long term human study that we have afa the best diet for us is that of the Okinawans. They are not on an Atkins type diet, but on a Walford type diet (low calories, lots of veggies, some fruit, small amts of protein and yes even grains). This is discussed at length in a post in the files called: " Atkins vs. CRON " . I hope those posting who are pro-Atkins have read that file, Walford's books, and are familiar with the Okinawan studies (which can be accessed through our " links " page). This is an excerpt of what Okinawans eat (from our " links " page): They eat remarkably healthy food. The traditional Okinawan diet is heavy on grains, fish and vegetables, and light on meat, eggs and dairy food. The Okinawans are especially enthusiastic eaters of tofu. Ogimi villagers like to mix it with seaweed in a concoction called " mooi tofu. " Eating tofu and other soy products works wonders because soybeans are loaded with flavonoids ‹nutrients known to fight breast and prostate cancer and believed to combat heart disease. Okinawans also consume lots of fish. Fish ‹ particularly cold-water varieties such as tuna, mackerel and salmon ‹ contains high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce the risk of heart disease and breast cancer. They steer clear of artery-clogging meats and dairy products. Results are astounding: Compared with the USA, death rates are 82% lower for coronary heart disease, 86% lower for prostate cancer, 57% lower for ovarian cancer and 82% lower for breast cancer. And from another source: So what are the older Okinawans doing right? According to the researchers, everything. They eat lots of plant foods - soy, vegetables, fruit and whole grains - a diet that's shown to keep the arteries unclogged, the better for cardiovascular health. They get most of their soy from tofu and edamame, the raw soybeans that the Canadian-born Willcox reports " go great with beer.
