Thank you Dusty,

I just got this message. I will check it out...because I really want to up my

Armour dose, but when I do, I lose my hair. Still showing signs of hypo with 2

grains.

Hi Henry,

Thanks very much for this information. I bought some EPO for something else,

so I will start taking it.

I am having hair loss ever since an endo, testing for something else took me off

Thyrolar

and put me on synthroid. I have been back on thyrolar since last year, but

still have hair

loss, freezing hands and feet, exhausted, no motivation, but have AFib, and

the doctors

don't want me to take more because they said it triggers the AFib. I usually

have a

high RBC count, so does that mean my ferritin is high or could be low?

What is the initials for the ferritin results on the lab report?

Oh No, Roni..... I don't have that info, but I am pretty certain it was

Ferritin. As I understand what the doc said, the iron we take in converts

to a usable form in our bodies and that form is ferritin. I add to a

chart on my computer when I get blood work results and I wrote what I

understand (hence the ferritin).

You can test just fine on iron stores, but have a problem with ferritin....

so its the ferritin that has to be checked.

I'd bet Chuck as a clearer picture of this and can confirm the scientific

name for the ferritin, if there is one.

Dusty

P.S. I know it is a side effect with Synthroid that each time you up the

dose you can lose some hair, but is usually settles down a short while after

the dosage adjustments. I haven't taken Armour so I don't know, but check

your patient insert - maybe that's the case.

Well, I went in for my blood work today, and my doctor had put down for

ferritin, but

the tech said she didn't think that was going to get covered by medicare, so I

told

them not to do it. They will be doing a CBC, which will sho red and white cell

and

hemoglobin (I think) so we'll see.

Ferritin is a huge protein complex that stores iron, up to 4,500 iron

ions in each complex. Free iron is actually pretty reactive and toxic,

so the blood stores it by surrounding it in this protein web.

I lost a little hair when I started T4, but I assumed it was because my

dosage wasn't yet up to full effectiveness.

Hi Dusty,

Thanks for the info, this has really put some fire in my belly.

Yesterday I got a blood test for iron (and zinc and, er <whispers>

tsh), so I should get the results next week.

I just looked in the mirror this morning - VIN DIESEL WATCH OUT!!!!!

More info - if you're taking evening primrose oil for thyroid-

related hairloss, you need to give it several months before seeing

results...(apparently it functions as a natural dihydrotestosterone

inhibitor - DHT destroys the follicles in both male- and female-

pattern hairloss (the process of which is apparently sped up if one

is hypothyroid)), although I'm concurrently testing some SAW

PALMETTO, which apparently works similarly...

I'm about a month in on the EPO and a week on the SP and iron

supplements - will report back if and when any change occurs.

In the meantime I'm just getting used to the Connery look LOL!!

Yo peace out,

Henry

OHG Henry you made me laugh out loud!!!! Thanks for brightening my day.

If your doc didn't specifically test for ferritin though, y our iron stores

can look fine but you could still have a ferritin problem. I'm gonna screw

up this explanation I know, but the way I understand it is that ingested

iron is converted to the ferritin form in our bodies so as to be more

usable. If this is not converting properly, you begin to have trouble. The

lab ranges are ridiculous, but most docs I've been to want the level to be

at or about 70 in order for me to feel well.

You could resemble Ringo (of the Beatles fame) in about a year if you

restored your ferritin were it too low.

Keep us posted.

Sooooo, if my feeble brain (LOL)gets this, iron is converted to ferritin

form so as to be more usable to us?

Dumb it down for me Chuck, if I've got it wrong.

I was really deficient and boy did it make a difference when I started

supplementing withe the ferritin. My energy level improved, my fingernail

and hair improved and I was generally much less fatigued .

I got mine up to 101, which made the doc happy. I started out just above

the lower lab range and the doc said that it is recognized that we shouldn't

really fall below 70 no matter what the lab says!!

In a sense. Ferritin is a giant molecular cage for storing iron until it

is needed. Turned loose, iron would not just be unusable, it would be toxic.

Dusty-

My ferritin was a 14 and I think that the scale is

like 11 - 100 something? My doctor said that that was

kinda low but that all the receptor type things were

full so it seemed okay. I took iron for a while and

felt great. I stopped taking it and have these

ridiculous ridges in my nails among other low iron

symptoms - do you think there is something to this?

That is so funny, I have never seen anyone else with

them before, now I'm not alone! Yeah, mine are

vertical as well and there will be a couple of these
