Guest guest
That 50 mg of iodine/iodide comes out to 42.95 mg of iodine. That is 286 1/3 times the RDA and 3 1/3 times as much as the doc prescribed. You probably wouldn't want to make a daily habit of it. I have no idea how much it takes to get " kelp sores " . It probably varies from person to person. The atomic weight of iodine is 126.90447 The atomic weight of potassium is 38.963707 The ratio of iodine to patassium in potassium iodide is: 126.90447/(126.90447 + 38.963707) = .7651 20 mg I2 + (.7651 * 30 mg KI) = 42.95 mg I2. > > > > > > > > > The 5% solution of Lugol's is: > > Lugol's solution consists of 5 g iodine (I2) and 10 g potassium iodide (KI) > > mixed with 85 ml > > distilled water, to make a brown solution with a total iodine content of 130 > > mg/mL. > > > > 1 drop = 1/20 ml > > > > 2 drops @ 5% = 13 mg iodine. > > 5 drops @ 2% = 13 mg iodine. > > > > > > I drink at least 2 liters of water a day so if the water had been iodated > > (instead of > > chlorinated) I would be consuming 16 mg iodine daily. > > > > I'll definitely stop if I get kelp sores... > > > > Hope this helps. > > > > -Mike > > > > Have a nice day ! > > > > > > > > . > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Nope you got it right you are guys are taking 86 x the RDA. I caught my typo after I sent it but figured someone would correct it. sue On 10/1/08 12:51 PM, " Mike Lawson " <mlawson66@...> wrote: > > > > Hi Sue, > >> > Anyway, if RDA is 150 mcg how many times over that are you taking? >> > Close to 860 x the RDA? > > 150 mcg = .15 mg > 13 mg/ .15 mg = 86 1/3 > > Unless I've dropped a decimal point somewhere. Guest guest
Hi Mike, I take NO idodine, I think you misunderstood me completely. Three are 3 to 4 labs in the country that perform what is known as an iodine load test. They supply the kit including the idoral it¹s a ONE TIME THING for the test that you or your doctor can order. sue On 10/1/08 1:07 PM, " Mike Lawson " <mlawson66@...> wrote: > > > > That 50 mg of iodine/iodide comes out to 42.95 mg of iodine. > > That is 286 1/3 times the RDA and 3 1/3 times as much as the doc prescribed. Guest guest
I made no assumptions about that, I was just doing a reality check on the amount of iodine one would consume to do the " iodine loading " test. I'm sure that it would be fine for a one time thing, unless you were allergic to it, or already had your system saturated with iodine. > > Hi Mike, > > I take NO idodine, I think you misunderstood me completely. > > Three are 3 to 4 labs in the country that perform what is known as an iodine > load test. > > They supply the kit including the idoral it¹s a ONE TIME THING for the test > that you or your doctor can order. > > sue
Guest guest
That¹s what I was wondering ‹ is is ok to take that much at once even just one time? Evidently it is or they would not pass it out like candy and I have not heard of zillions or really any cases where people are freaking out from these iodine load tests... I am not allergic as far as I know and have read it¹s EXTREMELY rare to be actually alleric. You may be ³sensitve² to it and react but not truly allergic. I have been injected with iodine before and of course as a kid had it swabbed on boo boos plus I know they used that orange stuff on my surgical scars, and I take a mineral supplement ever now and then that has 250 mcg of iodine... I just need to keep looking, thanking aloud and finding the best way to see if I do need an iodine supplement. I don¹t want to just start taking it and see... I don¹t like that approach personally ‹ but I know others do, doctors mainly (!).... That is still 32 mg, a slug well above the threshold for problems, if you are allergic. > > I think you guys are taking about 12.5 mg of iodine each with your 5 drops > of 25 Lugols each. I thought they were taking a 2% solution. That would be closer to 1 mg. of iodine. Chuck
Guest guest
Hi Chuck, I'm not sure where the 41% comes from... We are talking about KI right? I get KI to be 76.5% iodine. The atomic weight of iodine is 126.90447 The atomic weight of potassium is 38.963707 The ratio of iodine to patassium in potassium iodide is: 126.90447/(126.90447 + 38.963707) = .7651 This is what I came up with for iodine content in 50 mg idoral. 20 mg I2 + (.7651 * 30 mg KI) = 42.95 mg I2. Guest guest
Sue and Mike, I must be even sleepier. I left a 1 off of 127. > 41% of KI is iodine,... Mike, your numbers look fine. Chuck

As I did the calculation, I kept thinking that iodine was much heavier than that. I've been up since 3:00 a.m. letting the dog out. Apologies to all. Guest guest
No need for apologies. I definitely understand. You are a good soul to let the dog out at 3:00 in the morning. Hope you get some good sleep this evening. -Mike > > > > I'm not sure where the 41% comes from... > > My goof. Guest guest
They take 5 drops. As Mike said, about 13 gr. sue On 10/1/08 6:44 PM, " Chuck B " <gumboyaya@...> wrote: > >> > I think you guys are taking about 12.5 mg of iodine each with your 5 drops >> > of 25 Lugols each. > > I thought they were taking a 2% solution.
