Guest guest
yes of course they are all related, and all related to iodine deficiency. Cretinism is the politically incorrect word for Down syndrome. I understand that some have the extra chromasome and some don't. the man who just died at my group home had congenital hypothyroidism (no meds!) but his Dx was Down syndrome. very odd b/c he looked " normal " . just very tiny and MR. Guest guest
iodine prevents cretinism if mothers get enough b4 they get PG. iodine cannot correct the genetic defect but it can significantly improve a child's life/health. Guest guest
Apparently the correct spelling is Down Syndrome, although I always thought it was Down's Syndrome. Guest guest
Gracia, I usually ask you for a CREDIBLE reference. In this case I'll ask you for even a quack reference. I don't think you will even find a quack so misinformed as to say that cretinism and Down Syndrome are the same, or even related. Or that Down Syndrome can be treated with or is related to iodine deficiency. Cretinism and Down Syndrome were confused until about 1866. So it's been well over a century since any educated and intelligent person [such as a doctor] had any excuse for confusing the two. They are totally different, and they have totally different causes. .. .. > > Posted by: " Gracia " circe@... > <mailto:circe@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20Cretinism%20-%20Wikipedia%2C%20th\ e%20free%20encyclopedia> > graciabee <graciabee> > > > Tue Sep 9, 2008 8:21 pm (PDT) > > > yes of course they are all related, and all related to iodine > deficiency. Guest guest
somewhere in my brain (read on the internet or at work) I was told/read that cretin was the old politically incorrect term for Down syndrome. Guest guest
If you read literature over a century and a half old you might I guess find the terms cretinism and the condition of Down Syndrome used to describe the same condition. I believe " Mongoloid " was one of the terms used to refer to what we now call Down Syndrome. I read somewhere [Wikipedia?] that in some cases Down Syndrome continued to be sometimes treated with iodine for many decades after it was discovered to have no connection to cretinism or iodine deficiency. I probably might not be able to tell the difference between cretinism and Down Syndrome; and that's just one of the many darned good reasons I'm not treating patients. Perhaps the same applies to most of us... .. .. > > Posted by: " Gracia " circe@... > <mailto:circe@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20Cretinism%20-%20Wikipedia%2C%20th\ e%20free%20encyclopedia> > graciabee <graciabee> > > > Wed Sep 10, 2008 8:59 am (PDT) > > > somewhere in my brain (read on the internet or at work) I was > told/read that cretin was the old politically incorrect term for Down > syndrome. Guest guest
I found both; although just " Down Syndrome " most often. I posted what I found because I interpreted [maybe inaccurately] another post as correcting someone who wrote " Down Syndrome " by suggesting " Down's Syndrome " was correct and " Down Syndrome " was not. Guest guest
AFAIK Gracia only takes about 200% of what Forrest says should be all she needs. But she takes about 66000% of the RDA of iodine each day. If she ever sells her property the buyer should be able to turn the septic tank into an iodine mine!
