Guest guest
Hi, I don't post too often but the recent thread on Hashi's has me wanting to ask a question. I have hashimotos and have been taking synthroid for 10 years. I have 3 children, 2 girls and 1 little boy. He is 2 and he is also probably on the autism spectrum. No diagnosis yet bc we have been doing intervention with him since he was 6 weeks old. Anyway, I have recently read some recearch that a mothers antibodies could bind to brain protein in a developing fetus and disrupt brain development. This really upsets me. I also worry for my sister who also has hashimotos and has not started her family yet. Has anyone else heard this? Is there anyone else in this group with hashimotos and a child with autism? Also I was wondering if anyone could give me a referal for a GREAT endocrinologist and immunologist? Thanks for any input, Sara

Guest guest
-- while it's true that hyperT symptoms could appear if the iodine restored thyroid function in the presence of thyroid meds, it's also true that bouts of anxiety are not in themselves evidence of hyperT. I think jumping to that conclusion on the basis of anxiety is a bit swift. That's all I'm saying. Also, would like to say that Flechas' instructions are not the most cutting edge instructions with regard to iodine supplementation. Dr Brownstein's instructions are that iodine helps nodules and goiter. There is only one circumstance under which iodine can trigger true hyperthyroidism (i.e., in some who is not already medicated for hypothyroid), and that is in the case of an " autonomous nodule " -- one that is not responsive to TSH control. These are rare. -- >Levothyroxine has a 7 day 1/2 life and is stable when a dose is missed. >Just some good info to know. > >I do agree that unless you are self-managing your medication, which many >people are these days due to docs not understanding about thyroid tests >and meds, always check with your doc first. Guest guest
I didn't misrepresent anything. He is one doctor in a bunch of iodine doctors. Just because he is the most vocal about it doesn't mean he is right on all levels - he will even say this. The reason I promote not removing it is A) it is hard to live without an thyroid and the person I know who healed from cancer (3 forms of thyca) with the iodine protocol worked with one of the other iodine doctors to heal. She wishes to keep her experience private so I have honored that and not gotten into too much detail about the who's and how's as she did what I did. It would help if I could share but I must honor privacy. It is frustrating for me. Honestly there are precious few that have the *balls* to take cancer on naturally and not remove it. Many of us have had to do it after the fact proving that cancer can be eliminated naturally and that removal doesn't solve the problem. Yes it took me 4 years but my cancer markers were slowly coming down each year. It can take up to 10 years for thyroid cancer to appear and be dx'd so I didn't expect immediate healing either. We have come to expect the "magic pill" that fixes it all. But this is not the path for all. You should join the thyroidless group and chat with some of them over there. They will tell you what has happened to them since removal. That will help you to be better informed as to whether you want to remove it or try to fight it. Dr. Brownstein will work with anyone who decides that removal is not for them. He is not the kind fo doctor to push his agenda on someone. I only recently learned of his stance on this so it is not in the forefront of my mind as the Iodine project is bigger than just this one doctor. It wasn't until specifically asked that I responded. This group is about the iodine protocol and not about Dr. Brownstein - even though he is a close friend. There are many more doctors picking up the baton and running with it. I hope that helps to clear up my position. Guest guest
MD's are restricted by law and cannot legally tell you that it is possible to cure cancer. Thus they are stuck with the standard protocol. There are however some doctors who will allow you to buck the system, but you'd have to be educated in the alternative protocols and seek out help with it on your own. Guest guest
That is my thought on this as well. I did not press him on his comment but figured it was a liability issue. Remember that even though these doctors are holistic they still have to work within the system. They are sitting ducks for the "authorities" that already don't like how they practice. So what they do many not always be what they would do in a truly free environment with no fears of ramifications. I am not saying that this is the case for Dr. B. I am speaking in general terms. I have spoken to many natural / alternative doctors who have been hauled before medical boards and threatened by patients - it's disgusting. There are many paths to healing. Too bad so few are presented as options. That's where I feel groups like this fill the gap. They can present other's opinions. Guest guest
Thanks so much . I don’t know if you remember my story, but 25 years ago I found a nodule on my thyroid. biopsy found Hurthle cells so the doctors wanted to take out the thyroid as those cells usually mean cancer. I decided to do the Gerson Therapy(which , as you know, includes taking Armour thyroid as well as Lugols) as well as an all organic diet . I never went back to the doctors. I lived the Gerson way for almost 25 years and never knew if the nodule was cancer or not; I didn’t want them poking around again. At the beginning of this year the nodule was clearly bigger than usual and I felt it was interfering with my swallowing; so I bit the bullet, had an ultra sound which showed I also had two more nodules, very small on the other side of the thyroid as well. I decided to have it removed because of the swallowing issue; Of course they had to examine the thyroid/nodules and found no malignancy; not even the original Hurtle cells! I am doing fine on 3 grains Naturethroid daily (as well as Iodoral and companion nutrients) and still on my Gerson diet; I think its amazing the Hurthle cells were no where to be found, so I know from experience the thyroid can heal. I was sad to lose my thyroid, but happy I hung on to it for so long, my swallowing is normal now and so far so good. Thanks so much for the site! Guest guest
That's a great story. I knew you had done the Gerson therapy but did not know that it was for thyroid cancer nor did I know you were still on it. That is one thing I would like to look into when I am done with school. I have been playing around with raw food. I feel better doing a raw food diet but my family is not thrilled with it so I am trying to figure out how to deal with "two meals". I am glad you are doing well. I think the biggest key is to get on desiccated thyroid right away and to have a doctor that knows how to treat the whole body. I was given Synthroid and told I was fine when TSH and T4 were where they wanted them to be. Nothing else mattered. It was a long 6 years. Guest guest
Hi Mcarcy, I usually took 6000mg and split it to twice a day.Good quality one is quite expensive. The bottle I bought is about $40/week. Later I changed to organic Turmeric power, much much cheaper and can do the same thing. Now I use one table spoon turmeic power, mix it with some black pepper power that is said significantly increases the absorbtion, and then mix them with a little water and drink it. Turmeric is antiinflammation and anticancer. Jen > > How much circumin? I am happy to try anything. I am at the end of a two-day break from iodine protocol and the pain and tightness in the neck(pun intended)is just as bad. It has been bad ever since the FNA, actually. I thought it just might be the iodine making it act up, but now I am not so sure. > > I am taking the recommended amount for the protocol. I asked if I should alter any of the other ingredients in proportion to the iodine, but have not received a reply, so I just take the 200 B-2(100 2x day) and B-6 (500)as well as a B-complex. > > thanks > Marcy > >

Guest guest
Hi Anne- There has not been previous mention that Brownstein recommends surgical removal of the cancer in his protocol. This was perhaps the main point I was making, as Brownstein is the main doc and author being recommended(and naturally so, as the iodine protocol followed here is Brownstein's.)I am well aware that taking the mass out doesn't cure you, and I almost expect there to be metastases at this point, but my thought was that fighting small bits of metastases with iodine is more easily done that those plus growing tumors. In addition, I was also responding to the fact that there is sketchy proven info on fighting thyca without surgery. I trust the basic numbers, but there is so much more to it, and I honestly didn't think I would have to be such a pioneer. I asked about Brownstein's ideas on TT, simply because I wasn't hearing about his protocol for thyca. I couldn't find a doc to guide me through it. I am not looking for a quick fix, but have been advised here to really ramp it up on the iodine, suggesting urgency. I've never seen specifically ANY sense of a real time line beyond the first few months. 1,2,6,10 years to shrink a tumor? The value in this conversation for me so far--and I am sorry to belabor it, but I feel this needed clarification--is that one has to learn to live alongside the cancer and just trust that it will eventually go away and nobody really knows when. Perhaps the ONLY way to do this is to be absolutely certain that you WANT your thyroid at all costs; hence the thyroidless board to help with that decision.(doesn't a cancerous thyroid affect other systems as much or more than going thryoidless?) Does anyone know of people who DIDN " T have a heluva time on replacement hormone? Not being controversial..I just don't know how universal the experience is--if you are doing well, you tend not to seek out a message board for thyroid/thyroidless problems. Thank you Steph and everyone for your earnest commitment to this board and to promoting natural health and self-care, especially for iodine. If I hadn't found this board, I would still be shaking in my boots over RAI, the prospect of which led me to search for an alternative. Now enough from me! Guest guest
Hi Jen, The Gerson Therapy is a whole body change in lifestyle. Diet recommended is all organic; big salads and also vegetable soups, steamed veggies, some yogurt, no grains , beans, no processed food. In the beginning the patient is making and drinking 13 organic vegetable juices daily. also doing coffee enemas to help the toxins leave the body. Iodine is part of his therapy as is animal thyroid, niacin, pancreatic enzymes, clean, fluoride and chlorine free water. I did his therapy very strictly for two years, which is recommended for cancer patients and thru the years slowly, lessened the juices, tapered off the enemas, added grassfed meat and goat cheese, always sticking to eating lots of organic vegetables daily. Max Gerson, MD, developed his therapy many years ago and it has saved many lives for over 80 years. In his book, A Cancer Therapy, Rresults of 50 Cases(The Cure of Advanced Cancer by Diet Therapy)he presents a sampling of people cured by doing the therapy, he presents two documented cases of thyroid cancer that were cured using his therapy. I happened to find his book 25 years ago in a health food store when I was struggling with the decision to have my thyroid removed,I am so thankful I found it, as it changed my life. I learned that cancer is systemic, and the lump or bump is the body's way of walling off the bad cells to protect the body, and decided I needed to detoxify and rebuild my body to heal. The therapy takes a lot of time and dedication; in those days I had 4 small children, and they knew if they needed me, I was either in the kitchen making juice or in the bathroom! =-) The therapy starts the patient out on 18 drops of Lugols (half strength) daily and slowly goes down to eventually 3 drops daily as a maintenance dose; Dr Gerson died in the late fifties and the world was not as toxic as it is now. Their protocol still recommends this lower dose but remember the patient is also on a very strict detoxification program. When I found this group , bought Dr Brownsteins book and started to do research on Iodine in the past couple of years, I upped my dose to 50 mg. I often think Dr. Gerson , if he were still with us, no doubt would know we all need more iodine these days owing to our very toxic world. Sorry if I went on too long Jen to get to the answer to your question! Before I answered , I wanted to make sure I gave more details to the Gerson Therapy. I know it saved my life and I think its so interesting that he was so smart and always his Therapy was evolving as he observed his patients getting well. When he began in the 1930's and 40's, he realized the importance of iodine and natural animal thyroid for his patients, as well as an all organic diet! And its also so interesting that he started ALL his cancer patients out on Lugols and animal thyroid, realizing how important this was for total health, I remember reading that he realized that most cancer patients were hypothyroid, hence he made sure the thyroid had the materials the body needed to get the whole metabolism working. His daughter , Charlotte has furthered his work since his passing. Here is the Gerson website if anyone is interested www.gerson.org Hope this is helpful. Kathleen Re: hashimotos A wonderful story! Could you please tell me what was the highest level of iodine you took during the 25 years? and for how long at that amount?Jen>> Thanks so much . I don't know if you remember my story, but 25 years ago I found a nodule on my thyroid. biopsy found Hurthle cells so the doctors wanted to take out the thyroid as those cells usually mean cancer. I decided to do the Gerson Therapy(which , as you know, includes taking Armour thyroid as well as Lugols) as well as an all organic diet . I never went back to the doctors. I lived the Gerson way for almost 25 years and never knew if the nodule was cancer or not; I didn't want them poking around again. Guest guest
With respect, I remember Steph mentioning Brownstein's position on surgical removal before. (She didn't make a big deal of it, but she did mention it in passing.) There are a LOT of emails coming over the transom on this list, & it is easy to miss things. (I fear that I skim or skip over things that do not seem to apply to me, or that I am not ready to deal with yet. I know I have missed some important details -- but there are only so many hours in the day!) But I remember thinking that that was another one of the conundrums you run into in alternative health -- that people can agree on one point & disagree on another. It is also worthy of note that an alternative doc lasts longest in the current climate if he at least SEEMS to support mainstream community standard of care. He is a lot likely to get hassled for giving supportive care to somebody who has already "appropriately" had their thyroid removed, than if he takes a position that he can "cure" cancer without any mainstream modalities. He won't be around to help anybody if he gets pegged as a dissenter from modern medical "knowledge."One of the OTHER problems with alternative health is that everybody is so different, it is hard to give you a specific time-line. We all know how long surgery takes. And there are specific, one-size-fits-all for chemo & radiation. But healing is a less well defined concept. How much do you have to heal FROM? Some of us are more toxic than others, some of us have been sick longer than others, genetics plays a role... I am on an alternative prostate list, & there are guys on that list who are told they have 6 months to live if they don't have their prostates out. Many of them live 10 or 20 years after being told that, using only alternative approaches. Some die of prostate cancer, but others die of other things. Is it a failure if a guy has 15 good years after being told he has 6 months to live, but eventually dies of prostate cancer anyway? A lot of guys are fairly old before they get a PC diagnosis anyway, so it is really hard to say.It is REALLY hard to get into the headset of trusting the way your body feels. I haven't managed it 100% yet. I was thrilled when my thyroid nodule disappeared, along with other good things, & perplexed when it resurged. Some of the other good stuff has persisted, so I am just hanging in here, trying to keep the positive change in motion. You have to be able to deal with uncertainty. As long as I feel better than I did, I assume I am moving in the right direction. At the risk of repeating myself, you can always change your mind & go mainstream if alternative doesn't feel right to you, but once you have gone mainstream (by say, letting them remove your thyroid) you often don't have the option of healing alternatively. (I always think that even if you opt for mainstream stuff, you can't go wrong by beefing up your health first with a lot of nutrients.)Only you can figure out what's right for you. (Stinks, doesn't it?) You have to figure out what scares you more, & make your choices accordingly. I know that one of the things that made me reluctant to let anybody cut into my thyroid was that I don't want to be dependent on a pharmaceutical to stay alive for the rest of my life. As we approach our retirement years, the grim realities of fixed income become painfully clear. Elderly people have to choose between buying food & buying drugs every day in this country. It is sobering enough to realize that I am going to be dependent on iodine!AnneOn Oct 11, 2010, at 9:07 AM, marcyzram wrote: Hi Anne- There has not been previous mention that Brownstein recommends surgical removal of the cancer in his protocol. Guest guest
Hi kathleen, Thanks a lot for spending time on these details. It reminds me how important of a good diet. I have changed a lot about my diet recently. I eat salad, boild vegies, vegetable soups, fresh carrot juice, steamed brown rice, no suger and white flour. Also no fat/oil and dairy except for flax oil and cottage cheese for FOCC. Since I have to work full time, I have not been able to strictly follow any diet.Do you use any oil to cook your food? Do you eat egg? Where do you buy your coffee enemas? Thanks, Jen > > Hi Jen, > The Gerson Therapy is a whole body change in lifestyle. Guest guest
Hi Jen, Yes, I have flaxoil and hempoil daily mixed into my unflavored yogurt. If I make a stir fry with vegetables, I put a tad of olive oil. I don’t like eggs, but once in a while I buy cage free eggs for the rest of my family. Coffee enemas are not something one buys, you make them by making the organic yourself to use in the enema. Sounds like your diet is very healthy and with iodine in your diet, you are on the right track! Kathleen Re: hashimotos> >

Guest guest
Marcy, I have looked back through this whole thread, and here is your question: Regarding Brownstein's work in which iodine shrinks nodules: does his book address or share his experience with cancerous nodules? ’s original answer to your question: > >He does not treat thyroid cancer nodules with iodine. He treats with iodine after thyroid removal. Steph I thought that was a clear answer to your question. Guest guest
Donna: Leaving out information is as unethical as telling wrong information. Steph's answer, yes, answered my question, but left out the second half, which is that part of his iodine protocol is removal. We talk about effective treatment on this board, and for effective curing of thryiod cancer with iodine, he also removes. This is a HUGE piece of info to leave out. Implicit--very implicit--in my quest for iodine help is curing my cancer without surgery, not just knowing how much iodine and companions Brownstein recommends. To NOT tell me that the iodine doc whose protocol is recommended does not recommend keeping the gland is unethical, period. It is not right to play twenty questions on this board when it comes to these matters. Guest guest
Marcy, Leaving out information is as unethical as telling wrong information. I'm not going to address here the question of your interchange with . Instead I want to suggest you think a bit more about the importance -- or lack of importance -- of Dr. Brownstein's "remove it" recommendation. It may be that Dr. Brownstein truly believes the iodine protocol combined with removal by surgery is the safest and best approach to thyroid cancer. But it is also possible -- and I say this without any criticism of the doctor -- that he may feel he has to recommend removal by surgery or risk serious pushback from the AMA and from any litigious patients. MDs trying alternative approaches to serious diseases face a potential of loss of respectability, money, and even licensing. They can do just so much in the current environment. Guest guest
I didn't leave out anything - because part of the iodine protocol for another doctor may NOT be to remove the thyroid gland and to use iodine for treatment. It is ONE - ONE - doctor that is advocating this. Again I will state this is not a Dr Brownstein's iodine protocol list. If the protocol removed cancer for me after thyroid removal and it remove cancer in a friend who had thyroid cancer then why would I assume it would not work? You asked for a solution for a chance at curing cancer w/o surgery and I gave that to you. Please take this discussion to a positive level. It comes down to - do you want to try it or not? Only you can decided. Guest guest
Marcy, I have been reading the back and forth posts about this. I think you are making a lot of trouble over nothing. as been very patient answering your questions and to imply that she was being dishonest is beyond the pale. We all have to do our own research and not depend on any one person. With all due respect, I would think it is time for you to move on from blaming anyone and get to work on healing yourself! Guest guest
Steph First, please let me offer that my reply, while emphatic, sought to bring home the logic of my take on how this misunderstanding came about. This and other intense ideas need not be labeled " negative " ; I feel there is room for logical, civil debate on a very urgent matter, and that is actually a positive! My surprise and sense of betrayal at the info left out is that, while indeed there are many iodine docs, Brownstein's books are all recommended, and his iodine protocol is the only one I have seen referenced heavily here. As you have the experience and success with him with which to start this board, it only makes perfect sense that Brownstein would be the foremost doc for the group to consult(and the consensus/recommendation of members seems to be to consult his books.) Naturally, if a doctor's protocol is so respected, so would be his opinion. Again, I do hope you will thoughtfully consider--if you are going to use his protocol--revealing to your patients his opinion regarding excision and healing, even if only to then set yourself apart as an advocate for non-surgical. This is wisdom. It is holistic. It honors all of Brownstein's work and expertise, not just his measures of supplements. It reflects the truth of the matter that, while you healed of thryoid cancer, it took four years to rid bits of tissue, meaning that no one can figure about how long or how much iodine will shrink a dozen measurable nodules. I guess if there were a greater body of work like Brownstein's on thryoid tumors that had healed on iodine,it would be less murky. While a story of a friend who did it is somewhat helpful, the fact that she won't share any details, and the rather experimental amt of iodine, is less comforting now that I know that I am striking out into unknown territory. It doesn't mean I won't do it, but my mind has to be in a totally different place to do it in the face of Brownstein not recommending it. Again, I offer this as a learning experience; I was shell-shocked to realize that Brownstein himself recommended removal, and I think that others in my position would have been. Perhaps there is a way to communicate this so that others will have the benefit of a full disclosure on the work of this foremost iodine doc, and will face their decision with a more realistic sense of the territory they face.
